Between March 1995 and March 1997, 24 of these patients had been autografted with peripheral blood, and 14 had received peripheral blood autografts plus bone marrow. The study was a double-blind, prospectively randomized comparison of interferon gamma-1b (IFN-gamma), given subcutaneously at a dose of 50 microg/m(2) daily for 30 days to 18 of the 38 patients, vs. placebo (20 of 38). Administration started after 2 consecutive days of >0.5 x 10(9) neutrophils/l following autologous stem cell transplantation. At a mean follow-up time of 536 +/- 269 days, disease-free survival (DFS) for the IFN-gamma and placebo groups was 728 vs. 510 days, respectively (p < 0.0750 by the Generalized Wilcoxon/Peto-Prentice test). Overall survival (OS) time for the IFN-gamma and placebo groups was 830 vs. 755 days, respectively. Despite the limited number of patients included in this comparison, a trend for superior DFS was observed in the IFN-gamma-treated group, a finding which merits further study.

To investigate the regulation of β-defensin-2 gene expression by lentinan (LNT) and the relationship possessed other than a dose or time dependence. By contrast, most research on data mining has focused on algorithmic issues. A major open question is "what's an appropriate foundation for data mining, which can accommodate disparate mining tasks." We address this problem by presenting a database model and an algebra for data mining. The database model is based on the 3W-model introduced by Johnson et al. [2000]. This model relied on black box mining operators. A main contribution of this paper is to open up these black boxes, by using generic operators in a data mining algebra. Two key operators in this algebra are regionize, which creates regions (or models) from data tuples, and a restricted form of looping called mining loop. Then, the resulting data mining algebra MA is studied and properties concerning expressive power and complexity are established. We present results in three directions: (1) expressiveness of the mining algebra; (2) relations with alternative frameworks, and (3) interactions between regionize and mining loop.

This technique exploits the observation that, in the presence of recombinant interleukin 2 (rIL-2), large granular lympho cytes/natural killer cells become adherent to plastic surfaces, actively proliferate, and acquire high levels of LAK activity. Because of their adherent properties these cells have been termed adherent LAK or A-LAK cells. The present studies investigate the antimetastatic effects of A-LAK cells in a syngeneic rat model of experimental pulmonary and hepatic métastases. For pulmonary métastases, F344 rats received i.v. injections with a natural killer-resistant mammary adenocarcinoma, MADB106, and, for hepatic métastases,animals received an intrasplenic injection of MADB106 tumor cells followed by surgical splenectomy.

Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) established the HTS cable test center and installed 22.9 kV, 1250 A, 50 MVA, 100 m class HTS cable system to investigate the performances

The II -2 minipellet consists of atelocollagen derived from natural bovine skin together with 1 x 10'' units of recombinant IL-2. Administra tion of the IL-2 minipellet was performed into the spleens of BALB/c mice after translocation of the spleens to the s.c. position. Administration produced detectable serum IL-2 levels for 72 h. The IL-2 minipellet was evaluated for its efficacy against hepatic métastasesfrom colon 26 adenocarcinoma in the BALB/c mice. Both the administration of the II-2 minipellet alone and its combination with the injection of 5 x 10" lymphokine-activated killer cells resulted in significant reductions of the number of metastatic nodules. Moreover, increased survival of mice bearing colon 26 adenocarcinoma was noted in these two treatment groups. To investigate the mechanism of the IL-2 minipellet activity, we tested the lytic potential of splenocytes obtained after administration of the IL-2 minipellet in a 51Cr release assay. Cytotoxicity against YAC-1 cells and colon 26 cells was significantly augmented on Day 2 after minipellet administration. These results demonstrated that local admin istration of the IL-2 minipellet into the hepatic circulation was extremely effective against metastatic liver cancer.

Travel and sharing articles with their friends on New York Times. This has led to the emergence of social content sites, which is being facilitated by initiatives like OpenID 1 and OpenSocial 2 . These community standards enable the open access to users' social profiles and connections by individual content sites and are bringing contentoriented sites and social networking sites ever closer. The integration of content and social information raises new challenges for information management and discovery over such sites. We propose a logical architecture, named SocialScope, consisting of three layers, for tackling the challenges. The content management layer is responsible for integrating, maintaining and physically accessing the content and social data. The information discovery layer takes care of analyzing content to derive interesting new information, and interpreting and processing the user's information need to identify relevant information. Finally, the information presentation layer explores the discovered information and helps users better understand it in a principled way. We describe the challenges in each layer and propose solutions for some of those challenges. In particular, we propose a uniform algebraic framework, which can be leveraged to uniformly and flexibly specify many of the information discovery and analysis tasks and provide the foundation for the optimization of those tasks.

We have now analyzed the therapeutic efficacy of these treatments on both weakly and nonimmunogenictumors of three distinct histológica!types in two differ ent mouse strains. In all experiments, LAK cells were administered i.v. on days 3 and 6 and RIL-2 was injected i.p. from days 3 through 8 after tumor induction. The MCA-101 sarcoma was completely nonimmuno genic as defined by its inability to successfully immunize C57BL/6 mice. Nevertheless, administration of LAK cells plus 7,500-10,000 units RIL-2 was highly effective in reducing the number of established 3-day pulmonary métastases from this sarcoma (at 7,500 units RIL-2, mean number of métastases 37 ±11 (SE); P < 0.05; at 100,000 units, 2 ±1;

It is found that the polymerization process applied in the study provides a high yield of UHMWPE even at low polymerization temperature, and the reactor powders exhibit high melting temperatures (137-143ЊC) and heat of melting (180-210 J/g). X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and solid state 13 C magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra of the powders synthesized under various reaction conditions are examined and compared with those of a commercial UHMWPE powder. Our results reveal that a significant portion of the monoclinic phase is identified when the resin is polymerized at relatively low temperatures. Temperature dependent XRD and NMR experiments show that UHMWPE reactor powders synthesized in the study exhibit more drastic thermal behaviors than the commercial UHMWPE, and this difference becomes more pronounced with the reactor powders polymerized at low temperatures. The increased crystallinity and crystal size in newly synthesized UHMWPE powders at elevated temperatures (100-125ЊC) may significantly improve the processability of UHMWPE reactor powders into high strength tapes below their melting temperature. ᭧
