Research paper thumbnail of Linkage between Economy, Agricultural Land Use and Forest Processes-A Case Study of Selangor, Malaysia

A research is conducted to investigate the linkages between economy, agricultural land use and sp... more A research is conducted to investigate the linkages between economy, agricultural land use and spatial processes of different forest classes in Selangor, Malaysia with the aim of examining the spatio -temporal dynamics of the relationships and the processes over time. Basic spatial metrics such as the percentage of landscape occupied by different forest classes (PLAND), Patch Density (PD), Largest Patch Index (LPI), Patch Area (PA), Edge Density (ED), FRAC_AM -area of different forest types were determined in a GIS environment and these were linked with the economy, agricultural land use and forest consumption using multiple regression analysis. Findings show that there are significant inconsistent change in spatial metrics of forest classes over time. Moreso, at every time period, the inland forest class suffers greater loss than any other forest types and this could be attributed to agricultural expansion policy of the government at such times. Furthermore, spatial metrics were correlated with the natural logarithms of the population density, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), agricultural land use and forest consumption using multiple regression analysis. It was found that the population density and GDP were only able to explain 36.1% and 50.6% of the observed changes in the forest processes respectively while agricultural expansion and forest consumption were responsible for 56.6% and 65.0% of the change in forest spatial processes respectively. However, it was found that there were remarkable improvement in forest spatial metrics from 1990 till 2000 indicating that the forest restoration efforts of the government has started yielding positive effect. While the effort of the government forest restoration is commendable, yet a political will is still required in forest conservation (particularly the mangrove forest) in order to achieve sustainable economic transition as contained in the Vision 2020 development agenda.

To study the barriers toward the utilization of primary care services for mental health problems ... more To study the barriers toward the utilization of primary care services for mental health problems among adolescents in a secondary school in Hulu Langat, Selangor, Malaysia. This was a cross-sectional study conducted in July 2008 at a secondary school in Hulu Langat, Selangor. The respondents were selected using randomised cluster sampling among Form Four and Form Five students. Students were given self-administered questionnaire, consisting socio-demographic data and questions on their help-seeking barrier and behaviour. Help-seeking behaviour questions assess the use of medical facility and help-seeking sources. The formal help-seeking sources include from teachers, counsellors and doctors. The informal help-seeking sources include from friends, parents and siblings. A total of 175 students were included in the study. None of the students admitted of using the primary health care services for their mental health problems. Majority of the students were not aware of the services avai...

Research paper thumbnail of High-risk behaviours and concomitant medical illnesses among patients at methadone maintenance therapy clinic, hospital tengku ampuan afzan, malaysia

Malaysian family physician : the official journal of the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia, 2009

High prevalence of high-risk behaviours and concurrent medical illnesses among opioid drug users ... more High prevalence of high-risk behaviours and concurrent medical illnesses among opioid drug users would influence the outcome of Methadone Maintenance Programme. It would also require a special medical attention to contain these issues. This study explored patients' characteristics and their high-risk behaviours in order to understand more about opioid dependent users in Malaysia. A total of 172 patient case notes at Methadone Clinic Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA) were retrieved for relevant data. Many of the patients were engaged in high-risk behaviours such as needle sharing, unsafe sex and criminal activities. A large number of the subjects had contracted blood-borne diseases such as HIV and hepatitis infections. Education on the issue of medical and psychosocial complications related to high risk behaviours is essential. Medical professionals dealing with this group have to pay attention and update their knowledge on the medical issue.

The particulate emission concentration was measured at the outlet of an 8000 kg steam/h capacity water-tube typed boiler of a palm oil mill plant processing 27000 kg/h of fresh fruit bunch (FFB). The particulate sample was collected iso-kinetically using the USEPA method 5 sampling train through a sampling port made at the duct of the exiting flue gas between the boiler and a multi-cyclones unit. The results showed that the particulate emission rates exiting the boiler varied from 8.51 g/s to 126 g/s with an average of 44.3±31.6 g/s. In terms of concentration, the average particulate emission concentration exiting the boiler was 7.75±4.71 g/Nm 3 (corrected to 7% oxygen concentration), ranging from 1.50 to 17.7 g/Nm 3 (@7% O 2 ) of the flue gas during the measurement. Based on the 27000 kg/h FFB processed, 6000 kg/h fiber and shell (F&S) burned and the capacity of the boiler of 8000 kg steam/h, the calculated particulate emission factor was 5.91±4.21 g particulate/kg FFB processed, 26.6±18.9 g particulate/kg F&S burned and 19.9±14.2 g particulate/kg boiler capacity, respectively. Based on the finding, in order to comply with the emission limits of 0.4 g/Nm 3 , the required collection efficiency of any given particulate pollution control system to consider for the mill will be between 73 and 98%, which is not easily achievable with the existing multi-cyclones unit.
