Although the statute law appears in black and white, the traditions and expectations of those who create and use GL are definitely greyscale. And the latter are a better predictor of both infringement and litigation than the letter of the law itself. Casual US assumptions about using GL stem in part from technicalities in the pre-1978 copyright law, which often threw GL immediately into the public domain. These assumptions stem also partly from the low economic valuation of GL, and the key role economic value plays in US copyright litigation. Since moral rights play almost no role in US copyright law, common European features such as the right of withdrawal have no place in local expectations. In recent years digital publishing and international access have exposed these assumptions to a context where the separation of moral and economic rights is taken for granted. Legal rights, both within the US and Eur...

This ASIST President's Invited Panel will focus on the need for and roles filled by information professionals in preparing the public to become more critical consumers of information products and services, as well as discuss research around the development of tools and algorithmic solutions that filter, detect and flag fake stories.

Even though peer review is known to be imperfect, it remains a widely accepted quality assurance mechanism. Nonetheless in recent times attacks on traditional peer review have come from multiple sources, including concerns about effectiveness, calls for open peer review, and predatory publishers. The panel will discuss these and related issues.

This paper reports on the Researcher-Librarian Partnership, a research-mentoring programme that was initiated by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. Six new LIS practitioners within their first seven years of professional practice took part in the programme. Each was partnered with an experienced LIS researcher who provided mentoring and support. During the 12-month programme the new professionals designed and implemented a research project on a topic of interest. This paper outlines the details of the programme providing observations on how research mentoring can be a powerful way to ensure all stakeholders – practitioners, educators and professional associations – can plan an active role in supporting the development of a research culture within the profession.

The methodology applies anthropological techniques that examine the social circumstances within particular cultures and micro-cultures of the Euro-American academic world. The goal is to establish the circumstances under which particular academic authors do better with open access than without it.

One is to summarize the elements of the Cornell‐Yale digitization model in a way that would be useful to other institutions planning to follow their effort. The people involved with the Cornell and Yale projects have done an exceptional job in documenting their work. They have been the Lewis and Clarks of the digitization process. But because they were the first to explore this unkown territory, not every facet of their experience applies to those who follow the path they blazed. It is necessary to see which parts of their experience are applicable to a large state university like Michigan State University (MSU). The other purpose of this article is to show how MSU‘s experience has expanded the Cornell‐Yale model. In this MSU is following their tradition of documenting features that could be useful and relevant to to others.
