Poznan, a medium-sized city with a population of over half a million and with its immediate suburbs close to one million, was one of the four Polish cities which hosted the Championship. Three first-round matches were played here between 10 and 18 June 2012. Five years of preparations culminated in three weeks of festivity lasting from 8 June to 1 July. The event drew tens of thousands of citizens and sport-tourists both from Poland and abroad — the latter comprising mainly Irish, Croatian and Italian visitors, whose national teams played their group stage matches in Poznan — as well as volunteers engaged to help them to navigate their ways in the city. They all attended several games and hundreds of events organised in and outside the fan-zones. Both UEFA and the national and Poznan city authorities presented the event as a carnival of football and, later, as a great promotional success. However, the idea of hosting the Championship in Poland and in the city of Poznan also raised certain objections among (relatively small) groups of people who perceived it as an unnecessary expenditure. In Poznan, they protested against the fete in several public events, most interestingly, by organising a football tournament called ‘Euro za jeden euro’ (‘Euro for one euro’) at a dilapidated old stadium located close to the city centre, and by staging a nationwide demonstration, ‘Chleba Zamiast Igrzysk’ (‘Bread instead of Games’). In this chapter, we will focus on the second event.

The influence of maturity and the physical development of newborns on primary hypertension has been recently underlined. The aim of the study was to estimate the importance of low birth weight (< 10 percentiles--2500 g), low birth length (< 10 percentiles--50 cm), low Apgar score (< 4 points), prematurity (< 37 Hbd) in the developmental of hypertension in children. The project was conducted retrospectively in a group of 197 children with primary hypertension (aged 15.4 +/- 1.9) and 119 healthy children (aged 12.9 +/- 3.1) as the control group. The statistical analysis was performed with Epilnfo 6.0 procedures. Male sex, overweight and family history of hypertension increased the risk of hypertension in a statistically significant way and the adequate estimated odds ratios were: OR = 3.69 (95% CI: 2.20-6.19), OR = 22.76 (95% CI: 6.61-94.12), OR = 21.87 (95% CI: 6.27-91.1). No influence of low birth weight, low birth length...

Ac... more Sudden deafness (SD) is thought to be a heterogenic group of disorders as to etiopathogenesis. Acoustic neuroma should always be considered in the differential diagnosis. The authors analysed symptoms occurring in the group of 89 patients, diagnosed with acoustic neuroma. A special attention was paid to the role of sudden deafness as a clinical manifestation of the VIIIth nerve pathology. Progressive hearing loss, tinnitus, headache and sudden deafness were the most common complaints. Sudden deafness was developed by approximately 1 of the investigated patients (24.7%). Progressive hearing loss, tinnitus and sudden deafness were also dominating initial signs. The sudden deafness onset was preceded by the period of progressive hearing loss in 3 patients. In one case episode of SD occurred twice.

Pure-tone thresholds and ENG, along with the control of vertigo. Criteria described in 1995 by the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery were used. Patients treated with transtympanic gentamicin had definite Meniere's disease and had intractable vertigo despite optimal medical therapy, no symptoms suggestive of Meniere's disease in the contralateral ear, and serviceable hearing in the contralateral ear. The study analyzed the outcomes of 9 patients for whom follow-up data were available for periods greater than 24 months after transtympanic gentamicin. Complete control of vertigo was obtained in all 9 ...

Authors analyzed current optical systems for choosing assumption of the method to better visualize the inner ear intraoperatively. For practical clinical reasons optimal imaging of the inner ear is possible with additional digital processing on the display fitted to the head of the operating microscope.

All patients previously underwent a full conventional treatment, without the beneficial effect. Patients were classified into two groups: the first one consisted of 16 patients who received intratympanic Dexaven application just after termination of conventional treatment. The second group received intratympanic treatment 1 or more months after the conventional therapy had been finished. The pattern of intratympanic Dexaven application is presented. The results of treatment are promising (hearing improvement in 7 cases) and the method is both minimally invasive and inexpensive.

Nevertheless, we lack well-defined laboratory tests that might confirm the autoimmune background of the disorder. Therefore the diagnosis is often based solely on the patient's clinical profile and the positive response to the immunosuppressive therapy. In this article we present a case of 44 year-old woman with Meniere's disease successfully treated with systemic glucocorticoids. The pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of immune-mediated cases of Meniere's disease are reviewed.

The conventional markers behaved as reported previously. After orchiectomy, elevated levels of ferritin were found in the presence as well as in the absence of tumor; the extent of these elevations was highly variable. Serial determinations of serum ferritin showed two patterns of variation. First, in patients treated with retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, irradiation, and chemotherapy regimens without platinum, decreasing levels of the conventional markers and serum ferritin were associated with response to therapy and increasing levels with relapse of tumor. Second, in patients treated with chemotherapy regimens containing cis-diamminedichloroplatinum, the conventional markers returned to normal values while the ferritin level doubled or tripled and returned to pretreatment or normal values only several weeks after therapy. Thus, it appears that hyperferritinemia was a sensitive index of platinum toxicity. We conclude that the serum ferritin level has no value in staging after orchiectomy but is a useful index of response to therapy during treatment with retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, irradiation or chemotherapy without platinum or relapse of tumor. During treatment with platinum, elevated levels might be explained as a possible toxic side effect of this drug.

The study comprised a random group of 5663 Polish children aged 7-18 years. Smoothed WC percentile curves were computed using the LMS method. The curves displaying the values of the 50th (WC(50)) and the 90th (WC(90)) percentile were then compared with the results of similar studies carried out in children from the UK, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Cyprus, Canada and the USA. WC increased with age in both boys and girls and in all observed age periods the boys were seen to dominate. For 18-year-old Polish boys and girls the values of WC(90) were 86.5 and 78.2, respectively, and were lower than the current criteria developed by the International Diabetes Federation. Both WC(50) and WC(90) were higher in Polish boys and girls compared with their counterparts in the UK, Turkey and Canada and significantly lower than in children from the USA, Cyprus and Spain. The percentile curves for Polish children and youth, which were developed here for the first time, are base curves that can be applied in analysing trends as well as making comparisons with results of similar studies performed in other countries.

Digital imaging of autofluorescence may be useful for localization of such lesions during endoscopic examinations. Tissue fluorescence of 31 adenomatous polyps obtained from 16 patients has been excited in vitro using the 325 nm line of a He-Cd laser. Digital images of the autofluorescence are recorded in six spectral bands. This study provides new data about the spatial distributions of autofluorescence intensities emitted in different spectral bands by colonic adenomatous lesions and normal colonic mucosa. Areas characterized by autofluorescence intensity lower than in normal mucosa are found for a majority of the polyps under study. The observed patterns of spatial distribution differ for the different spectral bands and for different polypoid lesions. No inverse correlation is found between the emission intensity and the thickness of colonic mucosa. The results indicate the spectral bands most useful for diagnostic applications and demonstrate the complexity of the optical processes involved in shaping both the spectra and intensities of the autofluorescence.

Eighty-eight patients were studied preoperatively, and 79 postoperatively, before, at the time of, and after the diagnosis of relapse. The authors aimed to assess how often the GICA test failed, i.e., was false-negative in patients in whom the CEA test was true-positive and, more importantly, whether it could give diagnostic information in patients in whom the CEA test failed. Before surgery, serum GICA gave similar information to serum CEA in 56'percent of the patients: true-positive in 18 percent and false-negative in 38 percent; less information in 42 percent; and more information in only 2 percent. During the postoperative follow-up, serum GICA gave similar information to serum CEA in 55 percent of the patients: true-positive (i.e., rising persistendy from a postoperative nadir) in 27 percent and falsenegative in 28 percent; less information in 44 percent; and more informarion in only 1 percent. Therefore, this test in its present version, where both the catcher and the tracer antibody are the same, NS 19-9, is redundant.
