Dans cet article, nous employons la méthode de la lecture à distance afin d’identifier les lignes de force de son portrait tel qu’il est dessiné collectivement par les contributeurs du numéro d’hommage. Il s’agira de montrer que cette représentation de Gide est en même temps un autoportrait rétrospectif de la revue.

During the interwar years, Leo Faust worked in Paris as a correspondent for several Dutch newspap... more During the interwar years, Leo Faust worked in Paris as a correspondent for several Dutch newspapers, author of multiple tourist-guides, and owner of a Dutch restaurant. He cleverly combined these roles in order to convince potential tourists that they could rely on him to safely guide them through the Parisian night life. This article analyses Faust’s books on Paris and his advertisements in the press with the aim of reconstructing the kind of touristic experience he offered to Dutch visitors in Paris, and to establish how his representation of the City of Light taps into the wider cultural imaginary.

This article analyses the publication history of Dutch translations of Madame Bovary within the w... more This article analyses the publication history of Dutch translations of Madame Bovary within the wider context of Flaubert's reception more generally. In the decades following its publication, Madame Bovary was widely criticized due to its 'scandalous' subject matter. Gradually, these moralistic views gave way to a growing recognition of the novel as a modern classic. However, the immorality scandal continued to resonate with readers. We investigate how these diverging views on the novel informed the branding strategies employed by the publishers of its Dutch translations. Combining reception history, translation studies, paratextual analysis, and cultural sociology, we demonstrate how each publisher established a branding narrative that was informed by the status of the translator in question and that targeted a specific readership.

Sans pourtant que soit mentionné le nom de Flaubert, beaucoup de lecteurs ont sans doute saisi l'allusion à cette célèbre déclaration programmatique: « Ce qui me semble beau, ce que je voudrais faire, c 'est un livre sur rien » 2 • Car, depuis la fin du XIX• siècle. la référence à Flaubert est constante dans les milieux littéraires néerlandophones, gräce au travail de médiation de ses traducteurs 3 et d'essayistes influents qui l'ont présenté au pubHc néerlandais comme un des plus grands écrivains modemes 4 • 1 • « Wat ik in de toekomst nog wel 's wil[ ... ] is het grijze boek schrijven, een boek waarin hoegenaamd niets gebeurt. He set his finest melodies to texts by his friend Paul Eluard. Their intermedial dialogue gained yet another dimension in the song cycle Le travail du peintre, that was inspired by Voir, a virtual museum in book form. The enthralling interplay between poetry, music and painting is at the heart of this edition. Besides an integral recording of Poulenc’s 34 solo songs on texts by Eluard, it contains a richly illustrated introduction to the artistic context in which these compositions took shape.

Possédant une valeur culturelle et symbolique importante, le texte classique semble constituer une source éditoriale et com­merciale sûre. De ce fait, il donne souvent lieu à de multiples rééditions et retraductions, qui se présentent – bon gré mal gré – comme étant « meilleures » que leurs prédécesseurs. Mais considérer la retraduction comme une réponse au vieillissement textuel serait une perspective beaucoup trop simpliste. Ce dossier thématique ras­semble des études de cas qui mettent en lumière la diversité des motifs potentiels de retraduction.

Entreprise commune par excellence, la revue gagne a etre consideree dans son ensemble. Une lecture des sommaires de la NRF relativise le role de Gide et met en lumiere l’apport de certains membres de l’equipe. Mais l’attitude ambivalente de Gide est un des piliers de l'esprit NRF. Cette identite collective trouve son expression dans le genre polyphonique de la revue litteraire.

This article presents the history of the Dutch translations of Flaubert’s works, placed in a wide... more This article presents the history of the Dutch translations of Flaubert’s works, placed in a wider literary and cultural context. The fact that the first translations appeared relatively late (around the turn of the 20th century) may be ascribed to persistent moral objections against French realism. But mentalities gradually evolvent and Flaubert came to be recognized as one of the modern classics of European literature. All his major works have been published in several Dutch versions, which makes him one of the most translated French authors. We will discuss a few significant translations of his work, leading to a detailed analysis of the four Dutch versions of Madame Bovary.

Het effect daarvan is te merken in de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse literatuur, die vaak een sterke gerichtheid op Franse modellen vertoonde. Andersom heeft Nederland op verschillende momenten een rol gespeeld als cultureel ideaal voor Franse schrijvers. Dit boek beschrijft de geschiedenis van de literaire betrekkingen tussen beide landen aan de hand van een aantal case studies. Enerzijds wordt ingegaan op het belang van Frankrijk als cultureel ijkpunt en de daarmee samenhangende meertaligheid en aanwezigheid van Franse werken in Nederlandse boekencollecties. Anderzijds komt ook de blik van de Fransen op Nederland aan bod en laat dit boek zien hoe de Frans-Nederlandse betrekkingen in de loop van de tijd zijn gewijzigd onder invloed van culturele en institutionele verschuivingen. The thermodynamics and kinetics of antigen binding under diffusive conditions to an electrode sur... more The thermodynamics and kinetics of antigen binding under diffusive conditions to an electrode surface modified with ferrocene-tagged antibodies is studied within this work, and realised experimentally for the case of human chorionic gonadotropin (hGC) as the antigen with monoclonal anti-hCG antibodies immobilised on an electrode surface via a molecular wire platform. The formation of the antigen-antibody complex is monitored through the blocking of the ferrocene voltammetry, thereby enabling the fractional coverage of the electrode binding sites to be unravelled as a function of time. It is found that, at low antigen concentrations, a Frumkin adsorption isotherm fits the data, with repulsive interactions between bound antigens playing a significant rôle, with an affinity constant that is two orders of magnitude larger than in the case of an untagged antibody, suggesting that the chemical hydrophobicity of the redox tag may encourage stronger binding. Comparison of the experimental temporal data with relevant diffusion-adsorption models under activation control allows for the extraction of the kinetic parameters; at zero coverage, the rate constants for adsorption and desorption are, respectively, larger and smaller than the untagged antibody. The kinetic study enables the confirmation that this type of platform may be utilised for rapid (15 min) and quantitative electroimmunoassay. This is validated through proof-of-concept analytical measurements, yielding a limit of detection around 25 mIU mL-1 (corresponding to 2.7 ng mL-1)-a value used clinically for urine hCG measurements corresponding to around four weeks of gestational age.

Playing on the double meaning of the word projection, this book explores the multiple relationshi... more Playing on the double meaning of the word projection, this book explores the multiple relationships between the French literary genre of autofiction and the moving image. Élise Hugueny-Léger, a researcher of contemporary French literature and a specialist of the work of Annie Ernaux, departs from the idea that autofictional writing is a form of psychological projection, wherein a self-image is being cast onto the page. In a more literal sense, the word projection refers to the cinematic technique of showing moving images on a screen. Several francophone authors known for their autofiction have also been involved in audiovisual productions, but earlier criticism has largely limited itself to studying their literary output. By addressing this rich and complex subject matter, Hugueny-Léger makes a valuable and original contribution to the field of francophone life-writing studies.
