Research paper thumbnail of Qualitative Modelling of Gold Mine Impacts on Lihir Island's Socioeconomic System and Reef-Edge Fish Community

Environmental Science & Technology, 2007

However, a new gold mine has introduced a cash economy to the island's socioeconomic system and impacted the fringing coral reef through sedimentation from the near-shore dumping of mine wastes. Studies of the Lihirian people have documented changes in population size, local customs, health, education, and land use; studies of the reef have documented impacts to fish populations in mine affected sites. Indirect effects from these impacts are complex and indecipherable when viewed only from isolated studies. Here, we use qualitative modelling to synthesize the social and biological research programs in order to understand the interaction of the human and ecological systems. Initial modelling results appear to be consistent with differences in fish and macroalgae populations in sites with and without coral degradation due to sedimentation. A greater cash flow from mine expansion is predicted to increase the human population, the intensity of the artisanal fishery, and the rate of sewage production and land clearing. Modelling results are being used to guide ongoing research projects, such as monitoring fish populations and artisanal catch and patterns and intensity of land clearing.

A detailed summary of the relationships between historians, cultural critics, and major social figures, this work records fascinating stories such as historian Manning Clark's public exposure as a Soviet agent, the ferocious parliamentary debate on immigration sparked by historian Geoffrey Blainey, and the story of editor Robert Manne's defense of ...

Conservatives alleged that the Bicentenary was impugning the nation's British origins and promoting “a patronising 'noble savage'mystique of the Australian Aboriginal which fully caters to white guilt and black vengeance”. As these charges took hold, the government replaced the chief executive and removed all contentious elements from the Bicentennial program. Earlier still, there was a campaign to dislodge Manning Clark from ...

Among the many changes they observe is the use of increasingly vague, nominal forms and the decline of finite verbs. Whereas agencies used to 'build roads' , 'improve farming methods' , 'lend money' etc. now all their activities are expressed in the language of Management. Reports are replete with statements such as: "IDA has been moving toward supporting these strategies through programme lending. " It has not actually done anything-it has been moving towards doing something that will be 'supporting'. In their conclusion they note the constant use of gerunds indicating unspecific activity: 'Institutional strengthening' , 'Boosting growth'; 'Sharing knowledge'; 'Bridging the social gap'. "All extremely uplifting-and just as unfocused: because the function of gerunds consists in leaving an action's completion undefined, thus depriving it of any definite contour. An infinitely expanding present emerges, where policies are always in progress, but also only in progress" (2015: 99). Capacity building is such a process.

From the breath-takingly beautiful portraits of colourful or endangered fauna, to quaint thatch-roof villages and ceremonially painted natives, to confronting scenes of logging, or polluted seascapes, these dense and evocative images, with all their implicit assumptions, are skilfully deployed to manipulate donors and subscribers into handing over cash for the good cause. But the images frequently hide less glamorous realities and play upon racist and profoundly unscientific ideas about people and ecosystems. They also form part of an anti-development agenda that opposes and actively subverts the aspirations of the owners of the ecosystems being represented. In many ways the images are no less disingenuous than a Coke advertisement. In this paper we explore ways in which photography is used to mask reality in biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, and the...
