A significant percentage of TB patients are human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive. As the HIV epidemic is fueling the global TB epidemic, the prevalence of the virus in TB patients is a sensitive indicator of the spread of HIV into the general population in many regions. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of HIV-TB co-infection among a less studied population of Eastern India.

Serum electrolyte levels and anion gap, mean weights, SBP/DBP of preeclamptic age-matched women (devoid of diabetes, UTI, renal and liver disorders) in their third trimester, as compared to their normotensive counterparts, have been measured, analysed and compared with results of earlier studies. The preeclamptic group exhibits significant lowering of serum Ca 2+ (-22.6 %) or K + (- 3.85 %) and significant enhancement of each of serum Na + (+ 6.93 %), Cl- (+ 7.25 %), HCO3- (+ 8.74 %) and an insignificant and small increase in anion gap (+ 1.5 %). The observed results do not show any region-specific changes. Most plausible explanations are offered for the observed results. This article can be downloaded from www.ijpbs.net

Methods: A cross-sectional, single-centered observational study was conducted among doctors over a period of 8 months after clearance from Institutional Ethical Committee. All consented participants were subjected to anthropometric measurements and physical examination. Fasting plasma glucose and complete lipid profile were estimated using standard procedures after 12 h of overnight fast. MetS was defined according to the Modified National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III criteria for MetS screening. Results: Among 170 participants (males - 117 and females - 53), 64 (37.65%) were with MetS. Prevalence of same was higher in males (41.9%) than females (28.3%). The younger doctors (≤40 years) had more prevalence of MetS compared to the elderly (>40 years) doctors (41 [39.8%] vs. 23 [34.3%]). In the males, high blood pressure was the major contr...

Tribal ethnics possess a different propensity towards infectious and haematological diseases which may influence the inter-relationship of DM and TB and thus merit separate attention. To investigate the prevalence of diabetes in newly diagnosed pulmonary TB patients of tribal ethnicity in Odisha. A cross-sectional study was carried out over a period of 9 months at four designated TB microscopic centres in a tribal district (Malkangiri) of Odisha. A total of 110 tribal adults newly diagnosed with pulmonary TB were examined for Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) level. Diagnosis of DM and Impaired Fasting Glucose (IFG) were based on cut-off value of FBS recommended by the WHO. Data was entered and analysed using SPSS version 22.0. The prevalence of diabetes and IFG are found to be 13.9% and 8.9%, respectively. A significant difference (p<0.05) was observed between the mean ages of th...

Diseases with a high risk of sudden deaths in the pediatric age group have initiated the interests among the researchers to focus on electrocardiographic studies. Aims and Objectives: This pilot study was done to obtain the normal QT values for the various age groups and both the genders of pediatric subjects. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted which included 162 healthy children (93 males and 69 females) and electrocardiographic recordings were taken. Subjects with congenital or acquired cardiovascular diseases were excluded from the study. Results: All the participants were divided into three age groups of 1-5 years, 6-10 years, and 11-15 years. It was found that heart rate was inversely proportional to QT/QTc interval while RR interval was directly proportional to both QT and QTc interval. With age, heart rate decreases but other electrocardiograms parameters increase progressively. Although the heart rate is inversely correlated with QT/QTc interval, there is positive correlation of QT/QTc with RR interval. Conclusion: Electrocardiography should be started as a routine investigation in pediatric subjects for the diagnosis of congenital and acquired cardiac diseases and arrhythmias which can be evident from QT interval determination.

Research paper thumbnail of Electrocardiographic Changes Before and After Hemodialysis in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease

Hemodialysis is associated with both ventricular arrhythmias and dynamic electrocardiographic (ECG) changes. Objectives-The objective of the present study was to see if the serum electrolyte levels and electrocardiographic (ECG) readings are significantly changing after hemodialysis in comparison with pre-hemodialysis levels. Methods- An analytical, cross sectional study was carried out with 301 patients of CKD undergoing hemodialysis. ECG and serum electrolytes (serum sodium, potassium, phosphorus and calcium) levels prior to start of hemodialysis and at end of the same hemodialysis session were documented. Results -They showed ECG changes due to serum electrolyte fluctuations occurring as a result of hemodialysis. Potassium and calcium were the electrolytes which caused ECG changes such as decreased amplitude of P and R waves, ST segment depression and flattening of T waves after hemodialysis. Conclusion- Thus, changing the potassium and calcium concentrate of the dialysate, these ECG changes could be avoided. ECG can be recommended as a diagnostic and prognostic indicator of cardiovascular complications in hemodialysis patients and can be done on a routine basis before and after every hemodialysis sessions.

Prevalence of overweight and obesity has dramatically increased in developing countries and is related to cardiovascular risk factors. Anthropometric parameters have the advantages in daily clinical practice of being a simple to measure tool with good reproducibility, especially in a developing country like India. Aim of this study is to correlate some anthropometric variables with lipid parameters in healthy subjects and to assess the anthropometric variable which best reflects the altered lipid profile. Materials and Methods: A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted after the Institutional Ethical Committee Clearance. Included participants (1187) were subjected to anthropometric measurements such as height, weight, waist circumference (WC), and hip circumference using standard procedures on the same morning of the day, as the blood sample was collected after overnight fast and estimated for fasting blood sugar and lipid profile. Results: There is a weak correlation between body mass index (BMI) and lipid parameters. Among all the anthropometric variables studied, WC is best correlated to lipid parameters. The mean values of lipid parameters were not significantly different in BMI <25 and BMI ≥25 groups. Conclusions: WC remains one of the simple and reliable variables which best reflects the lipid profile. In a developing country like India, where measurement of cardiovascular risk factors such as body fat saturation and lipid profile remains difficult in the rural population, WC may be used as an effective tool, without being used as a substitute.

Deficiency of this enzyme can cause severe neonatal jaundice. This study aims at finding incidence of G6PD in newborns presenting with jaundice in KIMS, Bhubaneswar. Jaundiced newborn babies admitted to NICU were included in this cross-sectional study. Birth weight, gestational age, blood group of mother and baby (to diagnose Rh iso-immunization), bilirubin levels, reticulocyte count, hemoglobin levels, peripheral blood picture for hemolysis, presence of sepsis were noted. Direct Coombs test was also done to determine if the hemolysis was antibody mediated or due to G6PD deficiency. Out of 60 cases considered in this pilot study, 46 cases were males, consistent with the fact that females are mainly carriers and less affected.13 newborns were G6PD deficient,...
