Most of the Islamic architecture studies focus on mosques, then mausoleums. This makes the research field open for more studies on building types like baths, wekalat, etc. Bimaristans remain within the scope of structures that need more studies through comparatives and analytical analyses. This paper introduces comparative analysis between bimaristans in Cairo and Aleppo, with particular focus on those constructed during the Mamluk’s era. This comparison highlights the points of similarity between the concepts that influenced the designers by that time with respect to their different locations, surrounding context and historical background. Such factors caused to make distinguished differences that gave each location its unique identity. This research depends on inductive-deductive methodology; inductive by reading and explaining the architectural drawings of both case-studies, and d...

These problems are represented in direct and indirect separation between different zones in apartments, whether private or semi-private. This is due to; reduced areas, site location, building policies, etc. Such problems obstruct resident’s way of everyday life, and their living quality. After introducing such problems, this paper proposes a set of shape-grammars rules that facilitate designers, through their process to produce a range of design alternatives for the same area. Shape grammars’ rules are set according to three aspects: a) required relationship between zones for Carians culture, b) building policies as a constrain, c) the given building area in different situations (attached to neighbours or free standing, etc.) That rule works as a design tool for any designer in Cairo to select the suitable alternative and facilitate his creativity...

It makes from the church a landmark for the surrounding area. However, all of the documented architectural plans of the ancient Coptic churches have no place for the bell tower. This is according to the documentations of important authors and researchers in this field, such as; Somers Clark, Alfred Butler and Peter Grossmann and others. Therefore, the main interest of this paper is to determine the date in which Copts began to build up their bell-towers in churches, even if approximately. That by observing the documented plans, historical texts or even arts, to deduce the earliest bell-towers in Coptic churches. Therefore, we can mention the date Copts needed to build them or even were able to. This methodology gives the opportunity, moreover, to determine the regional influences (from the nearby middle east, Mediterranean, African....etc.) that reflected on the Coptic bell-towers from the early beginning, and even ...
