Objectives: The present study aimed at estimating the prevalence of substance abuse and evaluating some of its associated factors in Iranian adolescents. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was completed by 730 randomly selected students with a mean age of 17.6 ± 0.61 years during a cross sectional study in Yazd, a central province of Iran, during 2014. The aim of the questionnaire was to obtain information on substance abuse and socioeconomic information. Logistic regression model and Chi-square, or Fisher exact test were used for statistical analysis using SPSS; and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The highest frequency of one time and more than one time drug usage among students pertained to hookah 41.1% and 31.1%, cigarette 17.5% and 8.1%, alcohol 10.8% and 7.5%, Opiates 4.1% and 0.8%, hashish, bang or marijuana 1.9% and 0.7%, stimulants and hallucinogens 3.4% and 0.8%, and glue and lighter gas 0.8% and 0.7%, respectively. Based on the results in logistic regression models, male gender (AOR:3.02), mathematical physics (AOR:1.8), hookah and alcohol experience (AOR:14.4 and 3.4) for regular smoking in Model 1; male gender(AOR:2.7), cigarette and hookah experience (AOR:3.2 and 7.6) for ever use of alcohol in Model 2; and male gender (AOR:2.5), mathematics course studding (AOR:1.6), poor educational condition (AOR:1.7), high level of father education (AOR:3.9), and tranquilizer experience (AOR:5.8) for ever use of illicit drugs in Model 3 were considered as predicting factors. For all the abovementioned, p-values were less than 0.05. Conclusions: In the present study, it was found that drug abuse is at a warning rate. The findings pointed to the need for interventional plans to improve adolescents' health with regards to substance abuse. Conducting more studies on this population is necessary to approve the observed results of the present study.

Materials and Methods: A total of 62 occupational therapists (18 males and 44 females), aged between 23-48 (M=29.58, SD=6.96), employed in governmental organizations and private sectors, participated in the present study on a voluntary basis. Herzberg's Scale of Job Satisfaction and Occupational Therapists Clinical Competency Scale were used for data collection. SPSS (v. 18) was utilized for data analysis running Two-Independent-Samples test, Spearman correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The results of Pearson correlation test revealed that there is no significant relationship between clinical competency and job satisfaction (p=0.234). No significant difference was found between areas of cli...

Thus, this study was conducted to identify and compare the ability of emotional recognition (positive and negative) in people with BPD and the normal ones. Methods: The research design was retrospectivedescriptive and ex post facto type and was administered on 94 participants (47in BPD groups, 47 in control groups) that were selected by voluntary sampling and on the basis of inclusionexclusion criteria. The research tools included SCID-II and MCMI-III tests for screening and Ekman’s 60 facial expressions computer-based test for evaluating six main emotions. Data were analyzed by MANOVA test. Results: Findings showed there is a significant difference between BPD group and the normal one in the amount of emotion recognition (P<0/0001), and the BPD group has a better performance in emotional rec...

Proper recognition of this role and it's tasks by parents is helpful in all aspect of children's life. The purpose of this research was to construct and validate a questionnaire to assess parental role tasks. Materials and Methods: This study included two phases. In the first phase, information regarding the parental role was collected from resources such as books, articles, internet, and interview with professionals and parents. In the second phase, face validity and content validity were assessed by conducting a research with experts and scholars. Result: In the first phase of the study, 75 items were extracted through the literature review, reduced into 34 by an interview with teachers and parents. In the determining of content validity and face validity, only one item deleted with low score. Mean content validity index was 0/93 and content validity ratio had a value of 0/80. C...

Research paper thumbnail of Regulation of efferocytosis by caspase-dependent apoptotic cell death in atherosclerosis

The International Journal of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, 2020

During the growing process of the atherosclerotic lesions, lipid-filled macrophage foam cells for... more During the growing process of the atherosclerotic lesions, lipid-filled macrophage foam cells form, accumulate, and ultimately undergo apoptotic death. If the apoptotic foam cells are not timely removed, they may undergo secondary necrosis, and form a necrotic lipid core which renders the plaque unstable and susceptible to rupture. Therefore, the non-lipid-filled fellow macrophages, as the main phagocytic cells in atherosclerotic lesions, need to effectively remove the apoptotic foam cells. In general, in apoptotic macrophages, caspases are the central regulators of several key processes required for their efficient efferocytosis. The processes include the generation of "Find-Me" signals (such as adenosine triphosphate/uridine triphosphate, fractalkine, lysophosphatidylcholine, and sphingosine-1-phosphate) for the recruitment of viable macrophages, generation of the "Eat-Me" signals (for example, phosphatidylserine) for the engulfment process, and, finally, release of anti-inflammatory mediators (including transforming factor β and interleukin-10) as a tolerance-enhancing and an anti-inflammatory response, and for the motile behavior of the apoptotic cell. The caspase-dependent mechanisms are operative also in apoptotic macrophages driving the atherogenesis. In this review, we explore the role of the molecular pathways related to the caspase-dependent events in efferocytosis in the context of atherosclerosis. Understanding of the molecular mechanisms of apoptotic cell death in atherosclerotic lesions is essential when searching for new leads to treat atherosclerosis.

We present some fixed point theorems for two maps on complete S-metric spaces and an illustrative example is given for the single-valued case. By using the similar method as in [4], a common fixed point theorem for two single-valued mappings is obtained in S-metric spaces.

Research paper thumbnail of Ca2+ Flux: Searching for a Role in Efferocytosis of Apoptotic Cells in Atherosclerosis

Journal of Clinical Medicine, 2019

In atherosclerosis, macrophages in the arterial wall ingest plasma lipoprotein-derived lipids and... more In atherosclerosis, macrophages in the arterial wall ingest plasma lipoprotein-derived lipids and become lipid-filled foam cells with a limited lifespan. Thus, efficient removal of apoptotic foam cells by efferocytic macrophages is vital to preventing the dying foam cells from forming a large necrotic lipid core, which, otherwise, would render the atherosclerotic plaque vulnerable to rupture and would cause clinical complications. Ca2+ plays a role in macrophage migration, survival, and foam cell generation. Importantly, in efferocytic macrophages, Ca2+ induces actin polymerization, thereby promoting the formation of a phagocytic cup necessary for efferocytosis. Moreover, in the efferocytic macrophages, Ca2+ enhances the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Various Ca2+ antagonists have been seminal for the demonstration of the role of Ca2+ in the multiple steps of efferocytosis by macrophages. Moreover, in vitro and in vivo experiments and clinical investigations have revealed...
