One notable positive result of this migration phenomenon has been an increase in the inflows of remittances, which have partly inspired the emergence of enterprises. In February of 2009, Zimbabwe introduced the multi-currency system, which introduced new dynamics related to the sustainability of these enterprises. This, coupled with the foregoing, called for the review of the sustainability of remittance-inspired enterprises to ensure their potential for survival in the interim and the long term. As such, the present study was guided by a framework produced by the International Labour Organization (ILO), which lists the six basic conditions necessary for nurturing sustainable enterprises. This study made use of both primary and secondary data that included a household survey carried out on 40 household...

However, in spite of the existence of these supportive instruments, the country has not fared well in advancing the participation of women in politics. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Gender and Development barometer reveals that whilst women participation in politics is still below agreed benchmarks, Zimbabwe's citizens seem to believe the country is doing well in that regard. This article argues that the discrepancy between the perceived and actual realities in relation to the participation of women in politics is not by accident but is founded on a systemic and calculated maneuver by politically dominant males to open up the political space when necessary and convenient for them. We argue, drawing examples from different political players, that the participation of women in politics has been more of manipulation than a...

A number of reasons have been advanced to explain the food insecurity situation of which inter-alia include climate change, low food and agricultural productivity and production. This article is centred on assessing the use of treadle pumps micro irrigation technologies strategy in an attempt to counter low food and agricultural productivity in Umzingwane district of Zimbabwe. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used with data being collected through questionnaires, focus group discussions and key informant interviews. A total of 100 smallholder farmers participated in the study which covered 6 Wards. Study findings reveal that the use of treadle pumps improves household food security though this inevitably comes at a cost to the natural environment. This is largely due to the way in which t...

It investigates the handling of brand names in the Isichazamazwi SesiNdebele. In looking at this issue the article is driven by the realisation that most general purpose dictionaries normally do not include brand names as part of their macrostructural entries. This is a reality that is vividly expressed by the Chief editor of Webster's Third New International Dictionary of the English language as cited by Higgins (1997:381) where he proclaims that “this dictionary [Webster's] confines itself to generic words and their functions, forms, sounds and meanings... [presumably as distingushed from those that are nongeneric of which brand names are part of]. In light of this realisation this article sought to investigate whether the Ndebele general purpose dictionary, Isichazamazwi SesiNdebele (henceforth, ISN) lived within this tradition or deviated. Taking note that some words that could be legally (as informed...

The analysis takes place on two levels: the level of availability of information and the level of accessibility of the available information to dictionary users. Data derived from two outreach exercises carried out to ascertain users' perspectives on the dictionary and their competence in using the dictionary is also scrutinised while the notion of user-friendliness and the general principles of dictionary-making form the framework within which the analysis is done.
