The study was designed to explore inclination to speeding and to profile the driving behaviors in two-wheeler riding young men and women who reported a tendency to ride faster than their peers. A cross-sectional survey design was used. On the basis of three focus group discussions and review of literature, a survey was prepared to tap domains such as affect states associated with riding/speeding, factors contributing to speeding, inclination for competing, perceived speed and safety, etc. The study sample comprised of 961 two-wheeler riding college-going young men and women in Bangalore. Descriptive and inferential statistical procedures were used including Chi-square, Spearman's rank correlation, and independent sample t-test. The sample was divided into two subgroups on the basis of self-report of greater speeding than one's peers. A subgroup o...

Worldwide, cancer of tongue constitutes 5% of the total cancer incidence. Squamous cell cancer of head and neck is the most common cancer encountered in India. Oxidative stress is potentially harmful to cells and ROS are involved in multistage carcinogenesis, in initiation and promotion. Moreover, the extent of ROS-induced oxidative damage can be exacerbated by decreased efficiency of antioxidant defense mechanisms. The aim of this study was to assess the alterations in the circulating lipid peroxide, antioxidant components and the activities of defense enzymes in patients with cancer of posterior one-third of tongue, with respect to healthy controls in the Indian population. 60 patients with newly diagnosed, histologically proven cases of locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma (Stage III-IVa) of posterior one-third of tongue were recruited into the study. 60 healthy controls, without history or la...

Commonly suggested public health strategies to reduce childhood obesity are limiting television viewing, encouraging daily moderately intense physical activity of at least 60 minutes per day, increasing fruit and vegetable intake to five or more cups per day, and increasing water consumption. This study examined the extent to which selected social cognitive theory constructs can predict these four behaviors in African-American upper elementary children. A 56-item valid and reliable scale was administered to 222 students. Glasses of water consumed were predicted by self-control for drinking water and self-efficacy for drinking water (R2 = 0.123). Fruits and vegetables consumed were predicted by self-efficacy for eating fruits and vegetables (R2 = 0.083). For designing primary prevention interventions to reduce childhood obesity in the African-American community, social cognitive theory provides a us...

This study examines the predictive nature of EI with standardized measures of mental health to create a model that can be utilized to create more effective health promotion interventions. Step-wise multiple regression was used to predict mental health (Kessler K-6 scale) and Type D personality (Denollett's Scale of Negative Affectivity and Social Inhibition) with five dimensions of EI. The results revealed that while not all of the dimensions of EI regressed significantly in each model, mood management was highly predictive of all mental health measures under investigation. Cut-off points for each scale were also helpful in interpreting the relatedness of EI to mental health.

A cross sectional design using a valid and reliable survey was used. The survey was completed in Chongqing, Southwest China (n = 172). Knowledge of nutrition was deficient regarding sources of nutrients such as calcium and iron, relationships between diet/nutrients and disease, and only 36.1% of participants knew about the Balanced Diet Pagoda for Chinese. Eating habits did not meet the nutritional requirements, and a majority (59.3%) did not eat breakfast every day. The average score on the knowledge quiz was 51.8%. This study showed that homosexual persons with HIV/AIDS in China longed for nutrition knowledge, and this was supported by objective data. Efforts and targeted education programs aiming to improve their nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors need to be emphasized.

The present work explores the potentials of social networking sites as an adjunctive treatment modality for initiating treatment contact as well as for managing psychological problems. Interview schedule, Facebook intensity questionnaire were administered on 28 subjects with a combination of 18 males and 10 females. They were taken from the in-patient and out-patient psychiatry setting of the hospital. Facebook was the most popular sites and used to seek emotional support on the basis of the frequent updates of emotional content that users put in their profile; reconciliations, escape from the problems or to manage the loneliness; getting information about illness and its treatment and interaction with experts and also manifested as problematic use. It has implications for developing social networking based adjunctive treatment modality for psychological problems.

In the current article, we examine the potential role of MBIs for improving health and promoting wellness. We first describe typologies of MBIs and prevalence of their use. We also examine the efficacy evidence about how MBIs offer many psychological and physiological benefits, including reductions in disease symptoms and improvements in coping, behavior regulations, quality of life, and well-being. We further discuss how the health education discipline has long supported the inherent holism of the human being, the importance of healing potential of the mind on one's health, and values capacity for self-regulation and describe the potential opportunities for health educators as it relates to MBIs. Finally, we discuss implications for the profession of health education and promotion.
