No study has been done yet to stabilize Bentonite soil to last against successive wetting and drying cycles. In this research, Bentonite soil with approximately 45 wt% Montmorillonite mineral of the total amount was stabilized with cement and epoxy resin additives by gradually increasing the ratio of epoxy resin to water to withstand six successive W/D cycles. The uniaxial tests were performed on the stabilized samples after curing and 24 h of soaking in the third and sixth cycles. The swelling-shrinkage potential of Bentonite soil was evaluated by analyzing their stress-strain behavior, and it was predicted indirectly by determining the strength parameters. The results showed that for different amounts of cement, the minimum ratio of epoxy resin to water added to Bentonite soil to last up to six cycles was equal to 1. Also, by stabilizing the Bentonite soil so that t...

Despite of these researches and studies that carried out by technical experts and scientists, still the effect of positioning horizontal filter blankets on two and three dimensional seepage analysis are not analyzed in full details. In this paper, the effects of variation in the location of the horizontal filter blankets are studied. The results showed that the amount of flux is greatly influenced by the place of the horizontal filter blanket and it has more effect on flux in three-dimensional models than that of two-dimensional ones.

The curriculum focuses on physical fitness tests and student marks are apparently based on them. Students are dissatisfied with marking system and think it is unfair and biased. This destroys incentive and reduces the probability of a student's engaging in physical activity. This study aimed to modify the evaluation system of the course. During three subsequent semesters all participants were tested and marked by a new psychomotor test battery accompanied by new standards. The study included the whole population of 2651 female and 992 male subjects (age 18-24 years). Tests were administered by the same standards, but different administrators in every semester. Test Battery included Stork stand test, Sit-ups, 30 meter sprint, Sargent vertical jump, Sit and reach, Pull-ups, T-test, Trunk lift, Phantom chair, and PACER. Demographic data included age, weight, stature, and BMI. A new set of norms and standard...

An extensive laboratory programm was undertaken for polymer-modified bitumen including Crumb Rubber (CR), Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS) and Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR). Rheological and mechanical properties of modified bitumen samples such as penetration index (PI), and also asphalt mixture performance indices including Marshall stability, indirect tensile strength (ITS), compressive strength and indirect tensile stiffness modulus (ITSM) were investigated. The results showed that application of RGP-CR modifier had not only positive impact on the efficiency of bitumen and asphalt, but also made more improvement in their engineering properties. Moreover, modification using 5% CR and 5% RGP in asphalt mixtures resulted in the best overall performance. Moreover, from environmental point of view, application of RGP in asphalt mixtu...

Earthquake and its catastrophic failures has been one of the disturbance worry of Civil Engineers... more Earthquake and its catastrophic failures has been one of the disturbance worry of Civil Engineers. In geotechnical science, liquefaction is one of the most important phenomenons induced by earthquake. A change in pore water pressure follows a change in effective stress, and in a critical state in which pore water pressure equals the total stress in soil particles, soil strength is suddenly lost and liquefaction occurs. This phenomena cause destruction of structures constructed above ground surface or underground. In case of constructing underground structures or passing a tunnel through weak or compressible soils, with increase in forces and moments surrounding the structures leading to liquefaction, may impose damages to adjacent structures or soils. In this paper a tunnel passing through a soil media with liquefaction potential is modeled. After static equilibrium, dynamic analyses are performed. Using liquefaction modeling and measurement of induced forces and moments of covering...

A liquefaction-induced lateral ground displacement has been a very damaging type of ground failure during past strong earthquakes. In this study, neuro-fuzzy group method of data handling (NF-GMDH) is utilized for assessment of lateral displacement in both ground slope and free face conditions. The NF-GMDH approach is improved using gravitational search algorithm (GSA). Estimation of the lateral ground displacements requires characterization of the field conditions, principally seismological, topographical and geotechnical parameters. The comprehensive database was used for development of the model obtained from different earthquakes. Contributions of the variables influencing the lateral ground displacement are evaluated through a sensitivity analysis. Performance of the NF-GMDH-GSA models are compared with those obtained from gene-expression programmin...

Investigations carried out in various aspects such as changes in gradation, addition of various additives, changes in asphalt textures and etc. The objective of this research is to evaluate the advantages of adding recycled glass powder (RGP), Crumb Rubber (CR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) to base bitumen with grade of 60/70 for modification of asphalt concrete. Initial studies conducted for determining the physical properties of bitumen and modifiers. A series of asphalt concrete samples made using various combinations of RGP, CR, SBR, SBS and base bitumen. All samples tested using Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS), Indirect Tensile Strength Modulus (ITSM) and Marshall Stability Tests. The new data compared with the results of control samples. The results showed that replacing RGP with known polymers improved ITS and ITSM results considerably. Also the Marshall Stability of modified mixtures using RGP is more than what is found for the base blend. Ultimately, the new RGP modifier had a huge impact on pavement performance and results in high flexibility which can be concluded as high service life for the new modified asphalt concrete.

A primary study was conducted for determining the physical properties of asphalt cement and modifiers. Five asphalt binder formulations were prepared using various percentages of SBS and nano-SiO2powder. Then, Marshall samples were prepared by the modified and unmodified asphalt binders. Additionally, workability tests (Marshall stability, indirect tensile strength, tensile strength ratio and indirect tensile stiffness modulus) were conducted. The results of this investigation indicated that the asphalt mixture modified by 5% SBS plus 2% nano-SiO2powder could give the best results in the tests carried out in the current study so that this modification can increases physical and mechanical properties of asphalt binder and mixtures.

Direct determination of the bearing capacity of foundations requires performing expensive and time consuming laboratory tests. To cope with this issue, several numerical models have been presented by researchers. This paper presents the development of a new design equation for the prediction of the ultimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations on granular soils using linear genetic programming (LGP) methodology. The ultimate bearing capacity is formulated in terms of width of footing, footing geometry, depth of footing, unit weight of sand, and angle of shearing resistance. The LGP-based design equation is established using the results of several load tests on real sized foundations presented in the literature. Validity of the model is verified using a part of laboratory data that are not involved in the calibration process. The statistical mea...
