Although they are mutually intelligible, Northern Raglai is described as having a voicing contrast in onset stops, while Southern Raglai is assumed to have replaced the Chamic voicing contrast with a register contrast realized on the whole syllable (but primarily on its vowel). A production study of the two dialects confirms that Northern Raglai preserves a voicing contrast, even if most women exhibit partial devoicing of their voiced stops, and that Southern Raglai has developed a register contrast based on F1 and phonation cues at the beginning of vowels. The weights of the acoustic properties of voicing and register are similar across ages and genders, suggesting that the two laryngeal contrasts are phonetically stable. Even if there is little evidence of change in progress, a close inspection of the Northern Raglai voicing contrast reveals voicing-condition...

Results from task-oriented dialogues show that this rising tone (SAC), when occurring before the lexical high-level tone (NGANG), can be realised as low level or falling, resembling a different tone in the language (HUYEN). This is the case word-internally and within noun phrases. Two further observations give us an indication that a sandhi process could be developing: (a) this variation is not found in sequences across a larger juncture, and (b) the SAC tone does not undergo this change before other tones.

However, a production experiment reveals that rather than a voicing contrast, Chrau, like many other Austroasiatic languages, has register, a two-way contrast realized on syllables through a bundle of phonetic properties including phonation type, vowel quality, and pitch differences. Stop voicing is marginally present in some speakers but seems to be an optional property of register. The results of a perception study on register further suggest that speakers roughly employ the same phonetic properties in perception as in production. Individual variation is observed in both production and perception, but there is not a straightforward correlation between the two modes at the individual level—an indication that listeners’ perception is flexible enough to accommodate variation in production. Our results raise questions about the diachronic scenarios proposed to account for the transphonologization of onset voicing into register and tone in Mainland Southeast Asian languages.

A phonetic study with a native speaker reveals that a vowel in a final syllable closed by a consonantal suffix (CV+C) is more centralized than a vowel in a syllable closed by a consonant in the same morpheme (CVC). This process appears stronger at the beginning of the vowel than at its end. We further conclude that this centralization is less evident at the end of the vowel due to the strong influence of the final consonant on the vowel’s formant structure. The present study investigates the effect of morphology on the process of vowel laxing in Ngaju Dayak. Ngaju Dayak, an Austronesian language spoken in Central Kalimantan in Indonesia, exhibits a process of vowel laxing whereby vowels in closed syllables are more lax than vowels in open syllables. The purpose of this project is to see if vowels in syllables closed by a cons...

While the onset stops of Ancient Cham contrasted in voicing, the voiced and voiceless stops have merged into a single voiceless series in Modern Cham (excluding a series of voiced preglottalized stops). However, the distinctive role of voicing was transphonologized into a register distinction, in which the low register ( < *voiced stops) is characterized by a breathy phonation and a low pitch on the vowel following the stop, while the high register ( < *voiceless stops) is realized as a modal phonation and a higher pitch.

Rather than attempting a review of the literature about information structure in this huge linguistic area, this chapter provides observations about two languages that differ sharply in terms of how they convey information structure. Yongning Na (Sino-Tibetan) is an example of a language with abundant morphemes expressing information structure, whereas Vietnamese (Austroasiatic) makes little use of such morphemes. Along with key morphosyntactic facts, this chapter presents the role played by intonation in conveying information structure in these two tonal languages.
