preacher, teacher, polemicist, humourist, natural historian, and inspirer of generations ofPicton... more preacher, teacher, polemicist, humourist, natural historian, and inspirer of generations ofPictonians. The authors, Susan Buggey and Gwendolyn Davies, have done an excellent job of advancing the understanding of a complex figure who has not received his due among Canadian historians as a whole. For this reader's money, one of the most important pieces in the volume is the sketch of the extraordinarily contentious Newfoundland reformer William Carson by Patrick O'Flaherty. It is typical of O'Flaherty's articles in the DC}•, which have featured sparkling writing, meticulous research, and thought-provoking reinterpretation. The prominent contributions by two professors of literature (Davies and O'Flaherty) highlight another remarkable achievement of the editors. Over the years the project has mobilized more than the ranks of historians, drawing upon many of the best and freshest minds in several disciplines. In the case of literature, the work of Davies, O'Flaherty, and others has both enriched the historiography ofCanada nd strengthened a previously underdeveloped imension of Canadian literary studies. The research astonishes, the writing is clear and crisp, sometimes inspired. But readers of the DC}• also treasure the fund of entertaining anecdotes. The article on Tenskwatawa provides an exceptional specimen. In the spring of 28013 a future American president, William Henry Harrison, who was attempting to undermine the prophet's prestige, instigated the Delawares to challenge Tenskwatawa to perform a miracle. 'Ask of him to cause the sun to stand still the moon to alter its course,' Harrison wrote. In the words of the DC}• author, 'On • 6June • 8ot3 Tenskwatawa successfully predicted a near-total eclipse of the sun and his influence was markedly increased.' Over the course of the next two years large numbers of Amerindians from many tribes travelled hundreds of miles to meet the man who had risen to Harrison's challenge so magnificently. One suggestion may be in order as the series prepares for the twentieth century: to move the Contributors ection to a prominent position at the front or the back of the volume, or to colour the pages blue. The list of contributors should be more easily'accessible cause one of the best ways for a reader to ferret out articles in any DCB volume is to peruse the Contributors section for some clue as to where to begin. Beck, J. Murray, aha! There is sure to be new information on Jotham Blanchard, disciple of McCulloch and editor of Nova Scotia's first Reform newspaper. Moreover, the Blanchard article will certainly contain useful cross-references ...

In short, someone else will have to go over the same ground again, making use of these additional materials, and this, in a nation of scarce scholarly resources, is to be lamented. In his earlier work Robin has provided a powerful stimulus to further speculation about the uniqueness of British Columbia's politics. It is a pity, therefore, that in this major volume he has failed to respond to his own challenge.

Dans le contexte de la mise en ligne du Reseau canadien d'information archivistique depuis oc... more Dans le contexte de la mise en ligne du Reseau canadien d'information archivistique depuis octobre 2001, l'archiviste doit s'interroger sur la qualite de l'information et des methodes de reperage utilisees dans un portail reunissant des banques de donnees provenant de sources multiples comme le site Internet Archives Canada. Cet article propose un rapport d'etape sur un projet de recherche comparant les regles pour la formulation de notes de contenu dans quatre normes de descriptions : les RDDA, APPM, MAD et ISAD(G). Apres un rappel des principaux parametres du projet, il decrit la methodologie et presente les modes d'analyse retenus pour mieux evaluer les contenus de ces notes a partir d'exemples concrets disponibles dans des instruments de recherche accessibles sur Internet. La conclusion presente quelques constats preliminaires.

Sponsored by the Canadian Council of Archives (CCA), the book's concept, and to a large extent its execution too, emerged naturally as a result of the decision of the International Council on Archives (ICA) to hold its twelfth congress in Montreal in September 1992. In keeping with their purpose to honour archives in Canada, these essays emphasize our achievements. But they are also more than a puff of pride. Each author in his or her own way demonstrates their careful reading of recent events in Canadian archives. The result is a celebratory compilation marked by unusual candour, for the authors do not gloss over areas that are weak or problems yet to be resolved.
