In particular, the main objective of this research is to examine the relationships among proactiveness, innovativeness, digitalization, and firm performance and growth in the hotel industry.Design/methodology/approachThe data for this investigation were collected from 110 one- or two-star hotels that were operating in Poland during the time of this research. This study employs PLS-SEM to analyze the relationships among the examined variables.FindingsThe results show that digitalization has a significantly positive impact on a hotel’s performance. Moreover, digitalization mediates the impact of entrepreneurial behaviors on performance. In particular, digitization is a full mediator for the impact of proactiveness on firm growth and innovation on market performance. Additionally, there is a partial complementary mediation effect of digitalization in the case of impact of innovativeness on f...

Typically, this demand, expressed as the value or number of ATM withdrawals, has some regularities that can be used to evaluate future values for these variables. However, forecasting becomes a challenge when a crisis occurs that could affect the behavior of ATM users. In this context, it is important to identify how the development of the crisis and the various information concerning it may affect people’s attitudes to cash. This study aims to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the behavior of ATM customers. On the basis of daily data from 81 ATMs, we analyze the changes in the value and number of withdrawals just before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland. An event study analysis allows us to determine precisely the moments in which changes in user behavior took place. This means that it is also possible to exa...

While sustaining a business, performance becomes critical; there is insufficient knowledge on the use of entrepreneurial behaviors in mitigating the impact of a crisis by family businesses. To help fill this gap, this study explores the configurations of entrepreneurial behaviors that lead to improved performance in small firms under crisis market conditions – particularly, risk-taking, innovativeness, proactiveness, flexibility, and digitalization. This study employs fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). The sample consists of 117 one- and two-star Polish hotels that are comprised of both family and non-family businesses. The data was collected in November and December 2021. The results confirm the core role of risk-taking, proactiveness, and flexibility in increasing the performance of these small firms. However, performance ou...

There is little amount of tests determiningthe risk factors for these diseases among religious groups, although interest in this topic among public health practitioners is increasing. The aim of this study was to determine some factors of cardiovascular risk and the risk of cardiovascular events among Seventh-day Adventists (SDA). The study has been conducted among 118 randomly selected SDA Church members and based on the results of: anthropometric measurements, physical examination, laboratory tests (C-reactive protein [CRP], homocysteine, glucose, total cholesterol, HDL and triglycerides) and assessing the risk ofcardiovascular events based on the SCORE scale. Statistical analysis was based on the chi-square test and ANOVA. Founded significance level was 0.05. More than a half of the respondents were diagnosed elevated homocysteine level and gluteal-femoral obe...

In particular, we calculate the added value and employment growth for several industries that will contribute to the construction process. We use an input-output analysis that enables us to take the detailed structure of inter-industry linkages in Poland into account. According to our results, constructing a Hyperloop infrastructure in Poland would have the greatest stimulating impact on several sectors of the Polish economy, including crude oil and natural gas, metal ores, other mining products, building objects and construction work, products from other non-metallic raw materials, finished metal products, land and pipeline transport, and wholesale trade. However, this impact will be affected by the choice of construction technology (tunnel versus trestle). In addition, our calculations...

We tested six strategies (namely, entrepreneurial, market penetration, market development, product development, diversification, and cooperation). In particular, we identified combinations of these strategies that may lead to performance during the current pandemic crisis. Research Design & Methods: This is a quantitative study that uses fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). We identified and compared combinations of strategies that are specific for three market conditions; namely, non-crisis, the initial phase of the crisis, and the advanced phase of the crisis. The research sample consisted of 150 small printing enterprises operating across Poland. Findings: Our findings show that combinations that may lead to firm performance during crises differ from those that are specific for non-crisis conditions. Specifically, the presence of a diversification strategy together with the absence of a market-penetration strategy along with the presence of entrepreneurial, market-development, and product-development strategies may lead to an increase in firm performance before the crisis. During the initial phase of a crisis, the presence of an entrepreneurial strategy together with a product-development strategy or a product-development strategy that is accompanied by a diversification strategy may lead to an increase in firm performance. During the advanced phase of the crisis, the presence of an entrepreneurial strategy together with a product-development strategy along with a set of entrepreneurial, market-penetration, market-development, and cooperation strategies may lead to an increase in firm performance. The most common strategies are product-development and entrepreneurial strategies; these are present under all market conditions. Implications & Recommendations: This study confirms the role of a firm's strategy. This study exposes the necessity of adapting the strategy to changing market conditions. In particular, this study indicates which strategies and their combinations enable a firm to alleviate the impact of a crisis. These observations have meaningful managerial implications for entrepreneurs regarding the current Covid-19 pandemic crisis and possible future crises. Contribution & Value Added: The findings of this study contribute to the literature on the response to the Covid-19 crisis. In particular, this study indicates strategies that can help firms mitigate the impact of the pandemic crisis. This study implemented the fsQCA methodology to identify combinations of strategies that enable the mitigation of the negative impact of the crisis. Article type: research article
