Regarding mobile satellite systems, the concept of "smart antennas" implementing adaptive beamforming to real-time counteract co-channel interference seems unreachable on-board the satellite without a drastic increase of the payloads complexity. In order to simplify the satellite architecture, the possibility to entrust to the gateway the exploitation of the more sophisticated adaptive techniques was envisaged. The paper presents results of the studies on the concept of on-ground digital beamforming applied to the return-link of a non-geostationary mobile satellite system.

This paper reviews basic concepts, techniques, and technologies of multimode beamforming networks for satellite multiple beams and reconfigurable antennas.

The extensive use of CAD/CAM techniques is shown to be essential for an accurate design of large, complex BFN's. Optical distribution techniques are also discussed. Their possible application in multibeam antenna systems is likely to greatly improve performances and capabilities of BFN designs.

In this frame an intense trade-off was required to identify the most suitable system architecture in terms of traffic capacity and complexity. In order to evaluate satellite system capacity, a typical approach consists in performing a link budget with respect to a single user, while a rigorous approach would require the solution of the complete set of user link equations in a dynamic scenario. For the top-level dimensioning of the system, a tool able to quickly provide rough order of magnitude capacity assessment is required. The paper presents an integrated link budget method being used in the system trade-off activities. As compared to a classical approach, the proposed method offers not only an assessment of different system architectures in terms of available traffic capacity but, also allows an assessment of the relative system complexity. To this purpose, a multibeam antenna model was developed to evaluate the antenna subsystem physical and electrical characteristics versus coverage requirements. The tool proved itself very useful in the trade-off phase of the study both to rapidly assess the overall achievable traffic capacity and to perform a sensitivity analysis on different system parameters.

A system engineering approach to the design and development of phased arrays is shown to be essential in order to achieve an effective and synergic design and to implement large-scale production techniques. It is the author's firm opinion that a broadband technical background and an open, “lateral thinking” mentality are key factors for the successful design, development and production of active phased arrays
