This problem has been extensively addressed using machine-learning algorithms. However, these need a suitable dataset and entail considerable training time. Recently, extreme learning machines (ELM) have presented high precision in classification and regression problems but with low computational cost. This paper proposes evaluating ELM to map burned areas and compare them with other machine-learning algorithms broadly used. Several indices, metrics and training times were used to assess the performance of the algorithms. Considering the average of datasets, the best performance was obtained by random forest (DICE = 0.93; omission and commission = 0.08) and ELM (DICE = 0.90; omission and commission = 0.07). The training time for the best model was from ELM (1.45 s) and logistic regression (1.85 s). According to results, ELM was the best burned-area classification algorithm, considering precisi...

During the image acquisition, images are affected by surrounding parts of the eye such as eyelids or eyelashes. Besides, deformations of the iris image are produced due to pre-processing procedures. In this work, a new iris recognition method is presented based on the displacement information. This approach is based on the fact that deformations produced in the iris images can be used as discriminative information. Our proposal introduces the use of image matching based on optical flow to the iris recognition area. The proposed methodology uses the DAISY descriptor combined with the algorithm CPM, for feature extraction and matching processes, respectively. The experimental results on the CASIA-Iris-Interval dataset demonstrate the high accuracy of the proposed method. Moreover, comparison with other approaches based on seed points shows that it improves their results and it is competitive with other techniques.

Due to the complexity of direct measurement, the use of infrared thermography has been proposed as an alternative. This study compares Ψs and gs against crop water stress indexes (CWSI) calculated from thermal infrared (TIR) data from high-resolution (HR) and low-resolution (LR) cameras for two cherry tree cultivars: ‘Regina’ and ‘Sweetheart’. For this purpose, a water stress–recovery cycle experiment was carried out at the post-harvest period in a commercial drip-irrigated cherry tree orchard under three irrigation treatments based on Ψs levels. The water status of trees was measured weekly using Ψs, gs, and compared to CWSIs, computed from both thermal cameras. Results showed that the accuracy in the estimation of CWSIs was not statistically significant when comparing both cameras for the representation of Ψs and gs in both ...

Palm vein recognition is an emerging biometric technique, which has several advantages, especially in terms of security against forgery. Contactless palm vein systems are more suitable for real-world applications, but two of the major challenges of the state-of-the-art contributions are image deformations and time efficiency. In the present work, we propose a new method for palm vein recognition by combining DAISY descriptor and the Coarse-to-fine PatchMatch (CPM) algorithm in a parallel matching process. Our proposal aims at providing an effective and efficient technique to obtain similarity of palm vein images considering their displacements as discriminatory information. Extensive evaluation on three publicly available databases demonstrates that the discriminability of the proposed approach reaches the state-of-the-art results while it is considerably superior in time efficiency.

Our lines of work include basic and applied research. Among the basic research, we study executive functions, decision-making, and spatial cognition. In the applied field, we have studied neuropsychological and neurobehavioral effects of pesticides exposure, among other interests. One of our aims is to develop collaboration both national and internationally. It is important to mention that to date there are only few psychology laboratories and research centers in Chile involved with the fields of neuropsychology and neurosciences. Thus, this scientific effort could be a groundbreaking initiative to develop specific knowledge in this area locally and interculturally through its international collaborations.

The descriptor is obtained from the relationship between the line that joins the darkest points of the image and the line of the skeleton of the stroke. It was discovered that the relative distance between the line of the minimum gray level values in relation to the skeleton is not only characteristic of the author but it also varies from one person to another. The promising results of this study lead to the belief that it is feasible to develop a method of identity verification based on the descriptor presented.

This paper presents a method for measuring local motion in a sequence of 2D echographic heart images. The heart cavities are segmented using an implicit geometric active contour robust to speckle. A combined rigid and non-rigid image registration method is then used to estimate the motion field. The cavity

Common abnormalities found in a fetal brain can be ascribed to incomplete or defective neuronal migration, often correlated with genetic syndromes or exogenous etiological factors. Neuronal migration begins between the 7th and 8th week of gestation, whereby neuroblasts migrate along radial extensions of glial cells located in paraventricular buds. In fetuses less than 20 weeks gestational age, since myelization has not begun yet in the telencephalon, histochemical techniques such as luxol fast blue (for myelin) or Kluever-Barrera staining (for myelin and neuroblasts) cannot be employed. In order to identify the (normal or pathologic) topography of these guiding fibers and their relation with migrating neuroblasts, we are proposing here to replace luxol fast blue with PAS, thus taking advantage of PAS-positivity of glycogen conta...

With the methods currently used, a case is classified as KRAS-mutated when approximately 20% of the cells bear an activating KRAS mutation. These considerations raise the question of whether cells with a mutated KRAS can be found in mCRC cases classified as KRAS wild-type when more sensitive methods are used. In addition, the issue arises of whether these mCRC cases with low proportion of KRAS-mutated cells could account at least in part for the therapeutic failure of anti-EGFR therapies that occur in 40-60% of cases classified as KRAS wild type. In this study, we compared the classical assays with a very sensitive test, a locked nucleic acid (LNA) polymerase chain reaction (PCR), capable of detecting KRAS-mutated alleles at extr...

One of them is to study microbial biodiversity. Processing of this kind of images is a quite difficult problem, affected by various factors. Among these factors, the noise and distortion affect the quality of images, and subsequently, accuracy in interpreting the data. One of the problems this process presents is that lanes on the image are not perfectly aligned, and so the automatic processing of these images, e.g., for detection and quantification of bands, is not reliable. We present some methods for processing DGGE images that allow to improve their quality and thereof, improving biological conclusions. Results obtained with pure genetic algorithms, genetic algorithms hybridized with Tabu Search and genetic algorithms combined with Simulated Annealing are presented.
