It is specific to H2O2, can be calibrated accurately, and allows continuous real-time measurement. Without correction for the background fluorescence slope, however, H2O2-independent formation of the fluorescent product UltroxRed (or resorufin from Amplex™ Red) leads to artefacts. We analysed (1) the medium specificity of the background fluorescence slope of the AmR assay, and (2) the oxygen dependence of H2O2 flux in baker´s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Apparent H2O2 flux, O2 concentration, and O2 flux were measured simultaneously by high-resolution respirometry equipped with the fluorescence module. The apparent H2O2 flux of yeast showed a maximum under hypoxia when incubated in Dulbecco´s Phosphate Buffered Saline DPBS or KCl-medium. This hypoxic peak Facts and artefacts in the AmR assay

The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (... more The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polylactic acid (PLA) 3D printing filaments as materials for mammography phantom construction, comparing their attenuation properties at two different set-ups: at a Calibration Laboratory and directly to a mammography unit. The attenuation of 3D printed test phantoms of two types of common 3D printing Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) filaments (ABS and PLA) were characterized in comparison with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). The measurements were carried out with standard IEC 61267 X-rays, using RQR 2-M and RQR 4-M beam qualities at the Instruments Calibration Laboratory, and then applied to a mammography unit, with measurements with 28 kVp and 35 kVp. Attenuation characteristics evaluated indicates the suitable equivalence of PLA to PMMA for 3D printing breast tissue equivalent complex phantoms. The plastic materials used in this study suggest that the FFF technique may be suit...

Flight dispersal represents a key aspect of the evolutionary and ecological success of insects, a... more Flight dispersal represents a key aspect of the evolutionary and ecological success of insects, allowing escape from predators, mating, and colonization of new niches. The huge energy demand posed by flight activity is essentially met by oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) in flight muscle mitochondria. In insects, mitochondrial ATP supply and oxidant production are regulated by several factors, including the energy demand exerted by changes in adenylate balance. Indeed, adenylate directly regulates OXPHOS by targeting both chemiosmotic ATP production and the activities of specific mitochondrial enzymes. In several organisms, cytochrome c oxidase (COX) is regulated at transcriptional, post-translational, and allosteric levels, impacting mitochondrial energy metabolism, and redox balance. This review will present the concepts on how COX function contributes to flying insect biology, focusing on the existing examples in the literature where its structure and activity are regulated not ...

In this scenario, mechanisms of knowledge achievement and management, as well as how recruitment, progression and evaluation are carried out should be reevaluated. We argue here that knowledge has become a profi table commodity and, as a consequence, excessive academic quantifi cation, individual output assessment problems and abusive editorial market strategies have reached unsustainable levels. We propose to reinforce existing guidelines and to establish new ones to overcome these issues. Our proposal, the Initiative for Responsible Scientifi c Assessment (IRSA), has the main goal to strengthen and expand previous movements in the scientifi c community to promote higher quality research assessment, focused on better Science.

The methodology was based on the selection of records of occurrence of Cerrado in georeferenced databases, thematic maps of geoenvironmental layers, and modeling of the distribution of species through the MaxEnt tool. Besides that, field research confirmed the presence or not of the species in the areas with a high probability of occurrence of Cerrado (≥0.7). As a result, the model observed a great capacity for the prediction of the occurrence of Cerrado in Ecotonal and anthropic regions (AUC = 0.82), revealing important hotspots such as relics from the past or Cerrado enclaves of high biodiversity. The work also points priority areas for the conservation and preservation of this increasingly endangered biome.
