The core idea is an interest in the use of expertise, standards and technologies on the one hand and on the other hand variations in adherence of patients to prescribed treatment - typically across a number of different lifestyle-related diseases or ailments, in comparison between a number of European countries. The focus would, more specifically, be on two aspects: evidence-basing of relevant treatments and patient adherence to expert recommendations for preventive purposes in the cases of the disease categories selected. At this point the selection of disease categories to focus on in the workshop and the grant proposal is left open; the following are only named as examples: irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, high choleste...

As shown, this concept is useful not only for the small subfield of sociology of scientific knowledge (SSK) but also for the broader social sciences. First we analyse, by reference to interpretative flexibility, the initial dispute within medical research concerning evidence for and against a possible link between the measles component of the MMR vaccine and autism. In a second step we move beyond this traditional application of the concept, showing how the interpretative flexibility of the research results remains in society although consensus has been reached in the medical community. This further step is exemplified by two legal events, in Sweden and the US respectively. In both these cases the difficulties in providing uncontested evidence affected institutions and practices at great distance and with different outcomes. Our findings suggest the importance of not only applying the concept of interpretative flexibility to classical scientific laboratory disputes, but also connecting it to its societal manifestations .

This article focuses on how research on happiness has become a quickly growing and successful field within western societies and what it says about both the social sciences and contemporary social order. The concept of co-production, as defined by Sheila Jasanoff, is used to show how science and society interact and influence each other. Hence, we show how happiness has become a significant topic for empirical studies and the way interdisciplinary research is intertwined with what is perceived as both challenging and worth striving for in society and culture.
