Oil spills along the coastline from tankers, bush fires in game reserves such as Pilanesberg, floods, as occurred this year in Mozambique, all have devastating effects on animals. These can also influence human health, as for instance, the carcasses found after floods, contaminate humans' water supplies. Zoonoses, where animal diseases are passed on to humans, such as Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever, Ebola, Anthrax and Avian flu also have to be monitored and preventative steps taken to avert outbreaks in the human population.

This paper reports on a scoping review of the literature on the information behaviour and information practices of academic librarians to determine how their information activities are linked to knowledge and skills development (i.e., their learning). Method. A scoping study of peer reviewed scholarly papers published in English between 2000 and 2019 was conducted. Over 5600 papers, retrieved from seven scholarly databases, were screened, based on title, keywords and abstract, resulting in 126 papers for analysis. Analysis. Data were extracted to provide an overview of the extent, range and scope of the selected literature. MS Excel and MS Word was used to sort, group and thematically analyse the data. Results. The review provided valuable insight into the information behaviour and information practices of academic librarians. It also identified several information activities librarians engage in to ensure they have sufficient knowledge and skills (i.e., to learn) to c...

An exploratory research project was therefore conducted at the Jotello F. Soga Library of the Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria to gain insight into the information behaviour of veterinary practitioners in South Africa, in order to recommend and develop appropriate information products and services. A survey of a small sample (70) with 24 respondents was undertaken to identify information needs and the methods used to satisfy such needs. The survey also covered the processes involved in information usage as well as the role of Google and other search engines, web services such as the International Veterinary Information Service (IVIS) and Web 2.0 applications such as blogs and wikis. Considering the importance of compulsory continued professional development (CPD) initiated by the South...

In order to produce research, information is needed. Very little research has been done on the information needs of veterinary science researchers and the role and services of veterinary libraries. The aim of this study was to determine what the information needs, information seeking behaviour and information use behaviour of veterinary researchers are, and how these needs are being met by the library. Researchers and information specialists at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria, were used as a case study. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected by means of questionnaires, focus group interviews, a citation analysis and LibQual results (only as additional information). Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to analyse the data. The study found that the information needs of researchers are influenced by the research env...

Knowledge creation is rapidly adapting and technological advances provide several new opportunities. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is intensifying the digitalisation of processes, products and services (Denning, 2018). Based on a case study at the Department of Library Services (DLS), University of Pretoria (UP), the main aim of this chapter is to demonstrate how the ‘Blue Ocean strategy and an adaptive leadership approach assisted in the identification of nine strategic focus areas to ensure a rapid response to emergent opportunities and changing user needs.
The ‘Blue Ocean strategy’, based on the book published by Kim and Mauborgne (2015), takes a reconstructionist view of strategy, which is built on the theory of endogenous growth. The authors argue that organisations should strive to avoid competition in existing industries (red oceans) and focus on innovation (blue oceans). The ‘Blue Ocean strategy offers a framework to guide leaders to build a strong people proposition by assisting them in mobilising the entire organisation to actualise a strategic move and successfully executing it in the logic of value innovation (Mi, 2015). To put the current case study in context, the following section will commence with an overview of the South African higher education environment. A brief literature review will provide background to the discussion of the case study. The chapter concludes with a few remarks on lessons learned and recommendations.
