Latex agglutination (LA), passive hemagglutination (PHA), immunoelectrophoresis (IEP) and specifi... more Latex agglutination (LA), passive hemagglutination (PHA), immunoelectrophoresis (IEP) and specific IgE, IgM, IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests for diagnosis and postoperative follow-up of 79 patients with surgically confirmed pulmonary hydatidosis were evaluated. Specific IgG ELISA was the most sensitive test (83.5%) and the least sensitive tests were specific IgE ELISA (44.3%) and IEP (50.6%). The specificity obtained for all the serologic test was above 97% in all cases. The greatest number of false positives in all tests (except IEP) occurred in patients with Taenia saginata and Taenia solium cysticerci infestations and in patients with lymphoma and leukemia. Specific IgG ELISA demonstrated the highest negative predictive value (93.8%). No statistically significant differences (p > 0.050) were found in the sensitivity of the tests when patients with only one cyst and patients with various cysts were compared. Electrophysiological study has been for long time the elected approach for the diagnosis and clin... more Electrophysiological study has been for long time the elected approach for the diagnosis and clinical evaluation of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). More recently, echography and other imaging techniques have been introduced in current medicine for their potential in the anatomical evaluation of the neural compression. To asses the usefulness of both diagnostic procedures we have compared the findings obtained by electrophysiological and echographic approaches in a group of 60 CTS patients with different degrees of the disease. In all patients the conduction velocity was evaluated in the median and cubital nerves using surface electrodes. For echography lineal transductors of 5-10 Hz and 5-12.5 MHz were employed. The patients were distributed for each test on a scale depending of the severity of the alterations detected by the corresponding technique and both files were subsequently compared by regression analysis, Pearson test and paired-test. The aim of this study is to investigate the seroprevalence of Echinococcus granulosus infection in this region. We studied 4824 serum samples from a random, representative population of healthy individuals from each province of Castilla y León, obtained over one year. An indirect enzyme-immunoassay developed in our laboratory was used to determine the presence of IgG antibodies against Echinococcus granulosus in these samples. IgG antibodies against Echinococcus granulosus were detected in 3.4% (164/4824) of samples studied, with a range of 1.26% to 7.10%, depending on the province. Antibody seroprevalence increased significantly with age, but there was no significant sex-related difference (3.66% men vs. 3.14% women). The short-term effect of a domestically produced equine antithymocyte globulin (ATG) was analyzed... more The short-term effect of a domestically produced equine antithymocyte globulin (ATG) was analyzed in 6 patients with acquired severe aplastic anemia (AA). All patients received 5 doses of ATG every other day in a 60-min intravenous infusion. Five peripheral blood immunoregulatory mononuclear cell (MNC) subsets, defined by monoclonal antibodies, were enumerated before and 24 h after each application of ATG. Following the first dose of ATG there was a significant and transient reduction in the absolute number of helper T lymphocytes. There was no statistically significant difference pre-ATG to post-ATG in the absolute number of MNC expressing activation antigen Tac (interleukin-2 receptor). However, Tac+ cells, which were significantly increased before ATG therapy, decreased to nearly normal levels after the fourth dose of ATG. A significant and sustained increment in the absolute number of monocytes (CD14+ cells) occurred following the third dose of ATG. The absolute numbers of MNC, suppressor T lymphocytes and cells bearing HLA-DR antigen remain without significant change along ATG treatment. These results suggest that: (a) Tac+ cells are probably involved in the pathogenesis of AA; (b) the target of ATG may be a Tac+ cell, and (c) ATG may stimulate monopoiesis.
