Using a lens that combines global production networks (GPN) with insights from informal economy and political ecology research, the authors examine how multinational corporations, artisanal mining, national legal reforms, and South-South investment initiatives crystalize into distinctive gold production systems in a wide variety of countries where global mining networks touch down.
