Identifying and understanding how resilience is generated in a local socioecological system is es... more Identifying and understanding how resilience is generated in a local socioecological system is essential for the design of future conservation strategies. The Linca sheep represents one of the most important – but least known – biocultural legacies of the Mapuche people in Patagonia. These sheep, which arrived in the region along with the conquistadors more than three centuries ago, have been almost completely displaced by the Merino sheep breed. In this work we analyse the principal components that characterise the relictual producers of Linca sheep. These components are the key for the conservation of this traditional practice and takes a substantial part of local zoological knowledge (LZK). Interviews with artisans (n = 51) who know, require or use Linca wool, either know the breeders, enabled us to contact and interview 13 families who preserve these sheep. Based on an interpretative study we identified 3 biocultural components and 11 analytical variables. Through this analysis ...

The following variables were observed: a) morphological: coat color pattern and coat color (CCP, CC); fur and fur characteristics (FUR, CHF); pigmentation of skin, mucous membranes and hooves (SP, PMM, HP); size and arrangement of ears (ES, EO); facial profile (FP); mamellas (M); beard (B); type and orientation of horns (HT, HO); shape of rump (SR); b) morpho-structural: length and width head (HL, HW); face length (FL); ear length (EL); shoulder width (SW); depth and girth chest (CHD, CHG); cannon perimeter (CP); body length (BL); height at withers (HAW); length and width of rump (RL, RW).

A set of 21 microsatellites was used to investigate the genetic composition of 24 Creole goat breeds (910 animals) from 10 countries to estimate levels of genetic variability, infer population structure and understand genetic relationships among populations across the American continent. Three commercial transboundary breeds were included in the analyses to investigate admixture with Creole goats. Overall, the genetic diversity of Creole populations (mean number of alleles = 5.82 ± 1.14, observed heterozygosity = 0.585 ± 0.074) was moderate and slightly lower than what was detected in other studies with breeds from other regions. The Bayesian clustering analysis without prior information on source populations identified 22 breed clusters. Three groups comprised more t...

It is of particular interest to characterize these populations as it is a native species and a high quality fibre production genetical resource. With the aim of describing phenotipically Lama guanicoe guanicoe populations, 262 specimens were sampled. The animals came from four different ecological regions, both wild and

Gibbons, M. Lanari, G. Morris and H. Taddeo INTA-EEA Bariloche, CC 277 (8400) S. C. de Bariloche, Argentina. INTRODUCTION The implementation of an improvement program in a system of Angora goat production is described. The mohair production is located on the northern area of Patagonia, in the provinces of Neuquén, Rio Negro and Chubut. The stock is of approximately 700.000 goats distributed in 4500 farms (figure 1). Smallholder farms are placed in desert and isolated areas.

Between 30,000 to 35,000 households practise pastoralism, estimates Red Chaco based on the 2018 National Census. In some areas, pastoralism is alive as a mobile, extensive production system. Despite the uncertainty about the precise numbers, pastoralists play a significant role in Argentinian agriculture and society. Argentina is a large but highly urbanized country, with 92% of the population living in towns and cities. Only 13.2% of the country is agriculturally well endowed; 70% of the land is semi-arid, and much of the rest is mountainous or too cold for growing crops. Livestock-raising is the main form of agriculture in such marginal areas, either as ranching or as pastoralism.Estación Experimental Agropecuaria BarilocheFil: Lanari, Maria Rosa.

This designation refers to goats whose phenotypic and productive attributes are neglected. These populations have different origins and were selected by diverse rural communities; however, they share some common characteristics, such as being adapted to harsh environmental conditions and being bred in arid areas. In order to determine the differential traits of local breeds within Criollo and contribute to their assessment as a local genetic resource, phenotypic characterization research carried out in the last decades were recovered. A database was built, with 19 qualitative and quantitative variables of 2170 females from 6 local populations: Criolla de Formosa (FOR), Córdoba (CBA), La Rioja (LRI), San Luis (SLU), Neuquén (NQN) and Colorada Pampeana (LPA). They were analysed descriptively and by multivariate analysis in order to define differences and similarities among them. The results showed shared (straight profile, horizontal ears) and divergent (type of coat, shin circumference) features. The conglomerates formed on the basis of the mixed data factor analysis showed a clear differentiation for FOR, LPA and NQN. CBA showed evidence of crossing with Anglo Nubian, while LRI and SLU were scattered. Four Clusters with good definition were formed for FOR, LPA, CBA and NQN. It is concluded that FOR, NQN and LPA populations have achieved a significant degree of phenotypic differentiation. The LRI and SLU did not show a clear differentiation and the CBA showed signs of crossing with commercial breeds and risk of genetic erosion.
