In this study, three metals such as arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) were measured in two commonly consumed fish species Oreochromis niloticus (Tilapia) and Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (Pangasius) that are commercially farmed. The concentration of the metals studied was found within the permissible limits. The concentrations of As, Cr, and Pb in tilapia fluctuated, ranging from not detected (ND) to 0.114 mg/kg, ND to 0.009 mg/kg, and ND to 0.085 mg/ kg, respectively. For Pangasius, the concentrations were in the range of 0.014 to 0.118 mg/kg for As, ND to 0.02 mg/kg for Cr, and ND to 0.047 mg/kg for Pb. Hierarchical clustering revealed that As was possibly taken up by leachate and groundwater, while Cr and Pb were from contaminated feed. In the industrialization era, pollution has deteriorated the quality and diversity of aquatic lif... more In the industrialization era, pollution has deteriorated the quality and diversity of aquatic life. Industries discharge their waste containing heavy metals into the water bodies. These heavy metals accumulate in different organs of the fish, causing mortality. This effect first appears in blood and affects the fish by alteration of blood components making the fish weak, anemic and vulnerable to diseases. Heavy metals pollution is thus targeting the major protein source in the form of fish. The exposures to heavy metals cause increase or decrease in hematological indices, with decline in protein and glycogen reserves. Therefore the impact of heavy metals was carried out on the fish Labeo rohita. Heavy metals affect the reticulo endothelial system and haematopoisis, changing osmotic resistance of erythrocytes. The red and white blood cells at different stages of the pathological process are subjected to quantitative and qualitative deformation.

Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) was used to measure the concentration of three HMs (As, Pb, and Cr) in two commercially farmed fish species that are widely consumed: Oreochromis niloticus (tilapia) and Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (pangasius). This investigation was done to determine whether there was any potential health risk. The concentration of the studied heavy metals was within standard acceptable limits. As, Cr, and Pb had respective mean concentrations of 0.037 ± 0.023 mg/kg, 0.005 ± 0.002 mg/kg and 0.029 ± 0.015 mg/kg in the case of tilapia; and 0.049 ± 0.017 mg/kg, 0.007 ± 0.005 mg/kg and 0.024 ± 0.009 mg/kg, respectively, in the case of pangasius. Hierarchical clustering revealed that As may come through seepage and groundwater, while Cr and Pb are the products of contaminated feeds. Study Design: The collection of the samples was done from January to March 2018 from Bay of Bengal near Chattogram city of Bangladesh. The study is based on randomly collected samples from the intended sampling sites (Randomized Block Design) to ensure the evenness and unbiases of the collected samples. Methodology: Analyses were performed for metals such as arsenic (As), lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). During each month, five individuals each with three replications from the three targeted species were collected, with a total of 135 (45*3) fishes in the study period.
