This volume is the ideal and concrete sequel of another special issue of “Isonomia”: Animali razionali. Studi sui confini e sulle possibilità della razionalità, edited by Pierluigi Graziani, Giorgio Grimaldi and Massimo Sangoi. The aim – then and today – is to overcome the barriers among different ways of thinking the status, the role, the function and the tools of philosophy. The theme of this issue is – once again – Reason, one of the most important things we have in common, but that is at the same time so enigmatic, complicated and problematic to think about. The authors of these seven essays reflect on some of Reason’s fields of application, that is, history of thought, economics, artificial intelligence, theory of argumentation, architecture, neuroscience and aesthetics.

Concentrating on the French, Italian and English translations of the Novum organum and De dignitate et augmentis scientiarum, and taking into account the Distributio operis, this contribution intends to survey the occurrences of the lemma idolum in the vernacular editions of these two works. A set of synoptic tables is provided at the end of this chapter.

Pellizzari made significant translation choices as for the crucial term idolum. His work on Bacon was immensely influential in Italy and his translation of the Novum organum remained very successful among scholars.

The chief testimonia are two: the autograph ms. of Excerpta from Bacon in the Ambrosian Library of Milan (Becc. B 201) and the in folio volume of Bacon’s Opera Omnia (Hafniae edition, 1694), which belonged to Beccaria, also held at the Ambrosian (Becc. C 158). This essay retraces the history of the ms, from its first discovery by prof. Amati to subsequent studies, focusing on its relation to the in folio, and on the Beccaria-Bacon relationship at large. Careful attention is placed on the excerpta from the Novum organum: since it was transcribed almost in its entirety, it is of signal interest to examine what omissions were made.

in particular his Discours sur le sciences et sur les arts (1750). Abbot
Ferdinando Orlandi (1795-1860) wrote Apologia delle scienze e delle arti in
confutazione del Discorso di Giangiacomo Rousseau (1831) and Elogio
delle principali scoperte ossia trattato dell’eccellenza dell’umano ingegno
(1831) to oppose Rousseau’s argument against science and the role of
reason. Orlandi, through an apologetic form, defends reason and faith, that –
according to him – are internally connected.

Two manuscripts in the Vatican Library collection (Ferr. 867 and Ferr. 941) contain over two-hundred letters addressed by various personages, men of letters, and high-ranking churchmen to Francesco Colangelo (Naples 1769-1836). A somewhat controversial figure, Colangelo was an Oratorian, bishop of the dioceses of Castellammare and Lettere, and also head of education from 1824 to 1831 and author, among other things, of a handbook on Galileo for the schools (Il Galileo proposto per guida alla gioventù studiosa). The letters belonging to the years 1791-1805 are of particular importance in clarifying aspects of his biography, his exchanges with representatives of the “Repubblica letteraria”, and the composition and circulation of his early production, bringing to light its underlying apologetic motive. A study of these epistulary exchanges may thus contribute to redress the quasi unanimous reproof of historiographers.
