The library is an important part of museum activity, both professional and scientific, as well as exhibition, valuable monuments. Through hard work and efforts of the curator Vjekoslav Celestin, who started keeping the museum documentation, which is the largest museum library in our country today, beginnings of the library can be traced. On the basis of Vjekoslav Celestin’s thinking about the necessity of a library in a museum, and its continued enrichment with material, for the purpose of its museological as well as scientific function, the library department of the Museum of Slavonia continues the tradition today, with numerous problems that have plagued its predecessors, but with an important role in...

Family library of Prandau-Normann's has been recognized as an extraordinarily important heritage collection, and much like similar family literary heritage, it speaks of it's owners, their interests and habits. It represents a special type of monumental material which, on even terms with other heritage remains, bears witness to the time in which was made, it's content and the diversity of values and distinctiveness-bindings, decorations, ex librises, dedications, notes on margins-it highlights social and cultural happenings that have formed it. The individual specimens, and even more, the entire literary whole, take over the role of the witness of the passage of time, and the change that has taken place in society and space. In a word, it becomes a museum material without losing a shred of it's content value.

The value of these holdings consists not only of the rare, collector’s items exceptional within bibliophilic boundaries but also of the whole notion considering a history part of the specific region. By perusing the pages of family library, it is mostly about revealing its past, habits and interests of its members. Why is the library of Juliana Normann separated from a well-ordered count’s librarian holdings that had been gathered for years? Can we talk here about ‘’woman’s library’’, recognizing and noticing a ‘’lighter’’ literature? The fact that there were also collectors and readers in our region, is not less worth mentioning compared to the preserved fragments of specific family collections which witness within marks on ex libris, the expert systematized book holdings. Thus this book is often more than a ...

Economy of Eastern Croatia Yesterday Today Tommorow, 2012

The best way to learn more about one region and its historical, economic, political and cultural ... more The best way to learn more about one region and its historical, economic, political and cultural development is through books and other printed materials. In Croatia, there are many regional and local bibliographies. When it comes to Slavonia, the "Osjecka bibliografija Sv. I (1742-1944)" by Marija Malbasa provides the list as well as descriptions of all books and materials printed in Osijek, regardless the language they were written in. Although the Turks had left Slavonia after more than a century and a half long occupation, the Austrians expanded its system of military zones to some parts of Slavonia. The land was colonized by strangers, predominantly by the Germans. In the beginning, they lived and worked as farmers and craftsmen and eventually left important and valuable written traces about culture, economy, medicine, industry, military, medicine, religion, agriculture, forestry etc. The "Osjecka bibliografija Sv. I (1742-1944)", the local bibliography, contains a large number of publications written in German, many of which were dedicated to the agricultural themes and problems that evolved from everyday life. 3,295 books and other materials printed in Osijek. are recorded in the first volume (1742 1944) of Osjecka bibliografija (Osijek Bibliography) by Marija Malbasa. The main focus of our interest were books and other printed material regarding agriculture. The purpose of this paper is to connect the past, present and future, since 2,404 bibilographic units (Essekiana local history collection) are kept in the Museum of Slavonia's library in Osijek. This unique local collection of books has been made accessible to the wider public through a web catalogue in order to present its local history books to the community and raise awareness of the value of the books kept in the biggest museum library in Croatia. Thanks to Marija Malbasa's effort, we witness today that the importance of agriculture in Slavonia not only has a long tradition, but also that its development and problems have always been a significant and interesting topic to write about.

Ćirila i Metoda. Prepoznavanje i vrjednovanje franjevačkih knjižnih zbirki preduvjet je za proučavanje kulturne povijesti Osijeka i Slavonije.

Consequently, such a succinct analysis results in a revalorization of the computerized conversion efforts and a permanent appraisal of the Croatian thesauri, which are neither antiquated nor obsolescent but may be incentively put into service for further similar studies in the subject matter.

Our experiments show that a pigment palette is a common one for the period between 16th and 19th century. Several pigments were identified, like vermilion and minium, white lead and massicot. Further, we identified the ink used for the book cover inscriptions. Three complementary, non-invasive spectroscopic techniques were used: micro-Raman spectroscopy, PIXE spectroscopy and UV-VIS FORS spectroscopy. The challenges which occurred during the study are presented, such as the positioning of the book underneath the microscope or even the fiber optic probe holder, the roughness of the fore-edge surface and the thinness of the color layers.

Marom i zalaganjem kustosa-čuvara, u vremenima, uglavnom bremenitim za muzejsku djelatnost, stvarane su prve muzejske zbirke, otvarane prve izložbe, ali se započelo i sa sustavnim vođenjem muzejske dokumentacije, preko inventarnih Marina Vinaj: Kulturno-povijesna i znanstvena ishodišta Spomeničke knjižnice Prandau-Normann Summary Marina Vinaj CULTURAL-HISTORICAL AND SCIENTIFIC ORIGINS OF MONUMENT LIBRARY PRANDAU-NORMANN The museum library is created simultaneously with the Museum of Free Royal Borough, in Osijek, in the year 1877, following the fund of founding collections of archeological, numismatic and historical literature. It is continued through the years, through the effort of curators, and it aims to enrich the funds of professional literature, and also to spread the material on new collections of ethnographic and art history materials. The fund of the library of the museum in Osijek is, over time, gaining native materials as well, alongside regular increasing of professional museum literature. After Second World War, with the founding and work of KOMZA, the Museum of Osijek was in charge of taking care of the abandoned castles in Slavonia, and with classification of cultural and historical material, which will be delivered to the Museum. With especially rich literature fund, the Museum has gained possession of the material of old institutions and societies (Library of City Commission, Commercial Trades and Crafts), and the library of the nobleman family Prandau-Normann from Valpovo, and the part of the library that belonged to Pejačević family, from Našice.

Heritage institutions preserve in their archival collections precious book holdings of former ass... more Heritage institutions preserve in their archival collections precious book holdings of former associations, institutions as well as family libraries or merely their fragments.
