The Blanco Dark Energy Camera (DECam) Bulge survey is a Vera Rubin Observatory (LSST) pathfinder ... more The Blanco Dark Energy Camera (DECam) Bulge survey is a Vera Rubin Observatory (LSST) pathfinder imaging survey, spanning ∼200 deg2 of the Southern Galactic bulge, −2° < b < −13° and −11° < l < +11°. We have employed the CTIO-4 m telescope and the DECam to image a contiguous ∼200 deg2 region of the relatively less reddened Southern Galactic bulge, in SDSS u + Pan-STARRSgrizy. Optical photometry with its large colour baseline will be used to investigate the age and metallicity distributions of the major structures of the bulge. Included in the survey footprint are 26 globular clusters imaged in all passbands. Over much of the bulge, we have Gaia DR2 matching astrometry to i ∼ 18, deep enough to reach the faint end of the red clump. This paper provides the background, scientific case, and description of the survey. The central (‘bulge’) region of the Milky Way is teeming with a significant fraction of mildly me... more The central (‘bulge’) region of the Milky Way is teeming with a significant fraction of mildly metal-deficient stars with atmospheres that are strongly enriched in cyanogen (12C14N). Some of these objects, which are also known as nitrogen-enhanced stars, are hypothesised to be relics of the ancient assembly history of the Milky Way. Although the chemical similarity of nitrogen-enhanced stars to the unique chemical patterns observed in globular clusters has been observed, a direct connection between field stars and globular clusters has not yet been proven. In this work, we report on high-resolution, near-infrared spectroscopic observations of the bulge globular cluster NGC 6723, and the serendipitous discovery of a star, 2M18594405−3651518, located outside the cluster (near the tidal radius) but moving on a similar orbit, providing the first clear piece of evidence of a star that was very likely once a cluster member and has recently been ejected. Knowledge about the large-scale distribution of galaxies is far from complete in the Zone of Avoi... more Knowledge about the large-scale distribution of galaxies is far from complete in the Zone of Avoidance (ZoA), which is mostly due to high interstellar extinction and to source confusion at lower Galactic latitudes. Past near-infrared (NIR) surveys, such as the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), have shown the power of probing large-scale structure at these latitudes. Our aim is to map the galaxy distribution across the Southern Galactic plane using the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea Survey (VVV), which reach 2–4 mag deeper than 2MASS. We used SExtractor+PSFEx to identify extended objects and to measure their sizes, the light concentration index, magnitudes, and colours. Morphological and colour constraints and visual inspection were used to confirm galaxies. We present the resulting VVV NIR Galaxy Catalogue (VVV NIRGC) of 5563 visually confirmed galaxies, of which only 45 were previously known. ABSTRACTWe report the identification of possible extended star debris candidates beyond the clust... more ABSTRACTWe report the identification of possible extended star debris candidates beyond the cluster tidal radius of NGC 6362 based on the second Gaia data release (Gaia DR2). We found 259 objects possibly associated with the cluster lying in the vicinity of the giant branch and 1–2 magnitudes fainter/brighter than the main-sequence turn-off in the cluster colour–magnitude diagram and which cover an area on the sky of ∼4.1 deg2 centred on the cluster. We traced back the orbit of NGC 6362 in a realistic Milky Way potential, using the gravpot16 package, for 3 Gyr. The orbit shows that the cluster shares similar orbital properties as the inner disc, having peri-/apogalactic distances, and maximum vertical excursion from the Galactic plane inside the corotation radius (CR), moving inwards from CR radius to visit the inner regions of the Milky Way. We combine radial velocities, proper motions, and low resolution abundances for a sample of 315 K... more We combine radial velocities, proper motions, and low resolution abundances for a sample of 315 K and M giants in the Baade's Window (l, b) = (0.9 • , −4 •) Galactic bulge field. The velocity ellipsoid of stars with [Fe/H] > −0.5 dex shows a vertex deviation in the plot of radial versus transverse velocity, consistent with that expected from a population with orbits supporting a bar. We demonstrate that the significance of this vertex deviation using non-parametric rank correlation statistic is > 99%. The velocity ellipsoid for the metal poor ([FeH] < −0.5) part of the population shows no vertex deviation and is consistent with an isotropic, oblate rotating population. We find no evidence for kinematic subgroups, but there is a mild tendency for the vertical velocity dispersion σ b to decrease with increasing metallicity.

This is the second in a series of papers that attempt to unveil the kinematic structure of the Galactic bulge through studying radial velocities and proper motions. We report here ∼15 000 new proper motions for three low foreground-extinction off-axis fields of the Galactic bulge. Methods. Proper motions were derived from a combination of Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) and Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) images taken 8 and 9 years apart, and they reach accuracies better than 0.9 mas yr −1 for more than ∼10 000 objects with magnitudes F814W ≤ 24. Results. The proper motion distributions in these fields are similar to those of Galactic minor axis bulge fields. We observe the rotation of main sequence stars below the turn-off within the Galactic bulge, as in the minor axis fields. Conclusions. Our stellar proper motions measurements show a significant bulge rotation for fields as far from the Galactic plane as b −8 • .

Mapping galaxies at low Galactic latitudes and determining their clustering status are fundamenta... more Mapping galaxies at low Galactic latitudes and determining their clustering status are fundamental steps in defining the large-scale structure in the nearby Universe. The VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) near-IR galaxy catalogue (VVV NIRGC) allows us to explore this region in great detail. Our goal is to identify galaxy overdensities and characterize galaxy clustering in the Zone of Avoidance. We use different clustering algorithms to identify galaxy overdensities: the Voronoi tessellations, the minimum spanning tree, and the ordering points to identify the clustering structure. We studied the membership, isolation, compactness, and flux limits to identify compact groups of galaxies. Each method identified a variety of galaxy systems across the Galactic plane that are publicly available. We also explore the probability that these systems are formed by concordant galaxies using mock catalogues. 19 galaxy systems were identified in all of the four methods. They have the highest...
