Since its inclusion into the list of notifiable diseases, the Chilean Ministry of Health was able to maintain an adequate surveillance of leptospirosis. Nonetheless, some cases are not reported due to subclinical disease or nonspecific symptoms. Determine the national prevalence of leptospirosis and assess the epidemiological characteristics of seropositive individuals. Secondary data analysis of the National Health Survey, 2003. National prevalence was 0.4%. Low socioeconomical status and female gender were characteristics, which were more frequently found in sero-positive cases. The most common serovars were icterohaemorrhagiae, bratislava and pomona. We present the first epidemiological analysis of leptospirosis on a national level in Chile. Thus, the study contributes to the knowledge the epidemiological situation of this disease in Chile.

Ethylcyanoacrylate nanoparticles were prepared by an emulsion polymerization process and formulations containing different concentrations of nifurtimox, polyethylcyanoacrylates and surfactants were investigated and analysed for size and drug content. The nanoparticles obtained were less than 200 nm in size, as measured by electron microscopy and cytometry. The peak percentage of nifurtimox uptake into the nanoparticles was 33.4% for use of 500 microL polyethylcyanoacrylate, 200 microL surfactant (Tween 20) and 10 mg nifurtimox in 50 mL polymerization medium. The highest release of nifurtimox from the nanoparticles was 65.4% after 6-h incubation at pH 7.4. In-vitro studies using cultures of T. cruzi epimastigotes revealed considerably increased trypanocidal activity compared with a standard solution of nifurtimox. Studies of cell cultures previously infected with metacyclic forms of the parasite showed that only 2-h treatment with solutions of 0.001% of the nanoparticle suspension reduced parasitism by 87-94% both when the nanoparticles were loaded with nifurtimox and when unloaded. Electron-microscopic examination revealed processes of degeneration and lysis, suggesting apoptotic processes, in intracellular amastigotes and free amastigotes treated with the nanoparticles. It was demonstrated that unloaded nanoparticles, by mechanisms not completely elucidated, have trypanocide activity similar to that of a standard solution of nifurtimox. It is concluded that the nanoparticles loaded with nifurtimox constitutes a good carrier of the drug against T. cruzi. The loaded-nanoparticles significantly increase trypanocidal activity.

Although two patients had to be hospitalized because of the severity of symptoms of Trichinosis, other family members also presented symptoms but it was not feasible to obtain information about the source of the infection. The fear of punishment in addition to the lack of conscience of the importance of providing information of the origin of the infected meat, lead to these situations. We present this epidemic with the idea of encouraging the education on Trichinosis in the population.

The most popular are dogs, cats, and birds. Because the increasing importance of zoonotic infections in the world, we reviewed management guidelines, in order to avoid transmition of infectious diseases. It includes prevention measurements for immunosuppressed population in relation to pets.

To compare clinical-epidemiological variables among infants with/without parasitic infection. Subjects and Methods: a descriptive retrospective study was performed in 3,127 coproparasitological samples processed at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (1994-1998) determining frequency and parasitic species. Results: 167 (5.3%) showed parasitic infection, only protozoan, mainly G. lamblia. The most frequent reason for requesting the coproparasitological exam in infants with parasitic infection was diarrhea. Also 84.1% of the infected children were well-nourished and 4.5% with malnutrition. The most frequent reason for requesting the exam in infants without intestinal parasitic infection was failure to thrive and malnutrition. In this group, 68.9% were well-nourished and 24.4% with malnutrition. Conclusions: Presence of enteric protozoan was found in the coproparasitol...

These dwellings may be located in buildings or in codominiums. Aim: To assess the quality of life perception of elderly subjects whose dwellings are located in buildings or in condominiums. Material and methods: The brief version of the quality of life questionnaire designed for the elderly by the World Health Organization (WHOQoL-BREF) was applied to elderly subjects of seven poor communities of Metropolitan Santiago, that lived in basic dwellings located in buildings or condominiums. The questionnaire includes questions about physical, psychological, social relations and environment domains. Results: The questionnaire was answered by 124 elderly subjects aged 60 to 90 years, living in condominiums and 152 subjects aged 62 to 94 years, living in buildings. Satisfaction was of moderate or high level for physical, psychological and social relations domains. Those living in condominiums had a better satisfaction level in this last domain. The level of satisfaction of the environment domain was moderate and better for those living in condominiums. The perception of quality of life deteriorated along with age. Conclusions: Elderly subjects living in basic dwellings located in condominiums have a better quality of life perception than those living in buildings (Rev Méd Chile 2008; 136: 325-33). We report the case of a 52-year-old patient diagnosed with psoriasis refractory to traditional systemic agents, who was treated with biologic therapies.

The person who works and also cares for a disabled family member has personal and work-related problems and is less committed to their own self-care. Improving the perception of social support can be an effective intervention in this respect. The article describes an interdisciplinary program initiated in 2009 to support family workers-caregivers. Its purpose is to promote health and prevent disease risk factors by strengthening self-care skills and the development of institutional policies that facilitate efficient and healthy compliance with both roles. Some of the health promotion strategies that have been used include education for self-care, strengthening family and social support networks, professional counseling and a community of peers. Sixty workers took part in the last three annual cohorts: 83.4% were women, with an average age of fifty. The program ...
