Design/methodology/approach: Two years' system-generated datasets (log files) of e-book usage on Ebrary platform were analyzed statistically. Key finding(s): Only a small fraction of e-books was used in two reporting years at the case study academic and research library. Whereas, a major proportion of e-books was never even accessed. Research limitation(s): This study is limited to one case study institution and one e-book platform. Practical implication(s): In a subscription model of e-book acquisition libraries pay the subscription price for the whole database regardless of the usage or non-usage. Hence, renewal of subscription decision or selection of appropriate acquisition model should be based on the extent of usage particularly when funding is scarce. Contribution to knowledge: The findings of the study may be useful for those libraries that ...

At the time, it was recognised that the greatest value to professionals would come from a longitudinal study, enabling \u27flash in the pan\u27 innovation to be sorted from durable change that has implications for the work and education of RIM professionals. This article - in two parts in this issue of iQ and the next - reports results from the RIM Professionals Australasia 2010 Technology Survey, which has enabled a longitudinal view of data first gathered in 2008

Paradox also surrounds use of the terms ‘structured’ and ‘unstructured’. As more and more so-called ‘unstructured’ information sources are generated from ‘structured’ repositories, preservation planning for ‘unstructured’ sources must move to encompass the ‘structured’ information sources from which

The structural changes were promoted as creating collaborative departments focused on whole-of-government objectives and for delivering services in a more efficient and effective way. Part of these changes was to move the State Records Office of Western Australia under the State Library of Western Australia. The Australian Society of Archivists Western Australia Branch Committee discusses this act and the implications for the independence of the State Records Office.

The primary focus of the paper is an analysis framework that combines elements representative of both quantitative and interpretivist approaches. The framework was applied to the analysis of information and knowledge flows between Small-to-Medium Sized Tourism Enterprizes (SMTEs) that participated in a portal quasi-experiment based on the Cape Range Ningaloo World Heritage Region of Western Australia

A core element of the mission is to promote cross frame dialogue and learning aimed at enhancing prospects for conflict resolution. This presentation canvasses issues in vertical portal design, implementation, management and marketing of a low budget online community organised around an ecological theme. Nowhere is this more apparent than in academic libraries, where E-books in many libraries now account for more than half of the library acquisitions budget (Huthwaite et al., 2011). In situations where funding is scarce and E-book adoption requires substantial budgetary provision, libraries must

As take-up of e-books has grown to achieve mass adoption, what industry analysts Gartner describe as the “plateau of productivity”, the question of user acceptance may seem less relevant. However, if attention is switched from downloads to information behaviour, expectations and gratification, the picture of acceptance is more nuanced, with some studies pointing towards user disaffection. This paper reports on the information behaviour of another category of e-book users, i.e. apparently satisfied or intensive users. The paper is based on data analysis and interpretation of data from transaction logs generated by the Ebook Library (EBL) platform in an academic library. The paper forms part of a broader investigation of technology acceptance and options for improving the user experience of e-books within an academic library context. Three years of e-books transaction logs were mined for ev...

I thank them for their support, encouragement and guidance throughout the preparation, implementation and completion of this research. In the context of academic contributions, I thank Dr Pender Pedler (ECU), Dr Danielle Brady (ECU) and Mr Dean Diepeveen who advised me on the methods and techniques of empirical analysis that underpins much of the data analysis. A significant debt is owed to the owner/operators of the small to medium sized businesses that furnished the sample on which the empirical research at the heart of this thesis is based. From Cape Tribulation to Kangaroo Island, Exmouth to Bruny Island and beyond, the enthusiasm and goodwill shown for this research was fantastic. Likewise, a significant debt is owed to the portal quasi-experiment group located at Cape Range Ningaloo. I also thank my colleague, Mr Gurpreet Kohli, who participated in field trips undertaken under the auspices of the E-commerce Innovation in Ecotourism project, assisted with data analysis and ran the Cape Range server that provided the experimental component of the study. Lastly, I thank my wife Pam, son Alex and daughter Emily, whose patience and faith that the work would be completed sustained me.

In turn, it is engaging in debate with other academics and industry practitioners about the unique contribution that the LIS disciplines could make to KM. This paper reports on the research and consultative processes that the School undertook and discusses the findings and conclusions. It will also offer some thoughts on where the authors believe LIS, in particular, can make a contribution to the core knowledge and practice of KM]. Background and Introduction Knowledge Management (KM) has been practiced and reported on for a number of years. As early as 1988, Peter Drucker called attention to the primacy of knowledge assets in the future success of companies. By 1994, many articles addressed the importance of the individual employee's knowledge as opposed to the company's databases and reports (Ruth, Theobald and Frizzell, 1999). As the early enthusiasm for the concept subsides in the current management literature, KM is becoming part of the corporate culture of large complex organizations, especially those that operate in a multinational environment. Early insubstantial applications of KM theory and practice have given way to broadly focused initiatives that are transforming the way organizations work (Davenport, 2000). Despite this integration of KM theory and practice into the core operations of organizations worldwide, very few universities offer courses in this discipline area.
