An effective, efficient method is needed to improve compliance with screening, which has led to an increased interest in the use of the two-item Patient Health Questionnaire 2 (PHQ-2). The aim of this study was to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the PHQ-2 in screening for postpartum depression. A prospective convenience study was conducted among 200 postpartum women attending their postpartum or 4- and 6-month well-child visits at a multiethnic family medicine residency center. The sensitivity and specificity of the PHQ-2 was determined by using the well validated Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) as the gold standard. Positive responses to either scale led to further evaluation and referral. The sensitivity of the PHQ-2 was 100%, and the specificity was 79.3% using the EPDS as the reference standard. In addition, the PHQ-2 identified an additional four/nine women who were subsequently diagnosed with postpartum depression based on follow up of their positive screens. This study supports previous findings indicating that the PHQ-2 can be an effective tool in screening for postpartum depression.

Counselors who develop knowledge and understanding about the experiences of Asian Americans may improve the overall delivery of counseling services to this population.Topics discussed herein include: (a) negotiating Asian family socialization processes, (b) dealing with the cultural value of shame, (c) exploring one’s ethnic identity, and (d) dealing with the myth of the “model minority.” As individuals negotiate and explore issues related to cultural transitions, they may arrive at one of four acculturation outcomes: separated, marginal, integrated, or assimilated. Implications for counseling are discussed.

We aimed to develop and validate a computed algorithm that would allow evaluation of the abundance of bubbles in SB-CE still frames. Patients and methods Two sets of 200 SB-CE normal still frames were created. Two experienced SB-CE readers analyzed both sets of images twice, in a random order. Each still frame was categorized as presenting with < 10 % or ≥ 10 % of bubbles. Reproducibility (κ), sensitivity (Se), specificity (Sp), receiver operating characteristic curve, and calculation time were measured for different algorithms (Grey-level of co-occurrence matrix [GLCM], fractal dimension, Hough transform, and speeded-up robust features [SURF]) using the experts’ analysis as reference. Algorithms with highest reproducibility, Se and Sp were then selected for a validation step on the second set of frames. Criteria for validation were κ = 1, Se ≥ 90 %, Sp ≥ 85 %,...

Asian Americans constitute one of the fastest growing ethnic minority groups in the United States... more Asian Americans constitute one of the fastest growing ethnic minority groups in the United States (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 2002). From 1980 to 1990, the number of Asian Americans almost doubled in size (Tewari & Alvarez, 2009). It is anticipated that the Asian American population will exceed 40 million by the year 2050, a number that is estimated to be about 10% of the American population (C. L. Lee & Zane, 1998). As ethnic minorities in the United States, Asian Americans are faced with difficult challenges related to adjusting to a new culture. Research has indicated that approximately 60% of Asian Americans were born in countries outside of the United States (D. W. Sue & Sue, 2008). Hence, many Asian Americans are faced with the challenge of negotiating their identity as Asians with their identity as Americans. Two important psychological constructs have emerged in the psychological literature that examines the cultural adjustment process for Asian Americans: ethnic identity and acculturation. Although research on the relationship of ethnic identity, acculturation, and psychological well-being has appeared in the psychological literature, the majority of this work depicts Asian Americans as a homogenous group (Alvarez, 2002). This is problematic because some researchers have asserted that the differences between the many Asian ethnic subgroups may be as great as the differences between Asians and other ethnic minority groups (Alvarez, 2002; Tsai, Chentsova-Dutton, & Wong, 2002). Indeed, there are approximately 40 ethnic groups that fall under the rubric of Asian (D. W. Sue & Sue, 2008). The tendency among researchers to view this group as homogenous may perpetuate the stereotype that Asian Americans are all alike (Alvarez, 2002; Liu, Iwamoto, & Chae, 2010). In addition, although a number of studies have examined the relationship of ethnic identity, acculturation, and psychological well-being among Asian Americans, few studies have explored these constructs together in the same study. The Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure, the Index of Race Related Stress--Brief Version, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life--Brief Version were administered to 160 male and female participants from 3 ethnic groups (African American, Asian American, and Latino American). Results indicated that African American participants had significantly higher race-related stress, ethnic identity, and psychological QOL scores than did Asian and Latino American participants. A stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that ethnic identity and cultural racism were significant predictors of QOL and accounted for 16% of the total variance for the entire sample.

The Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) and the Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity ... more The Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) and the Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status (EOM-EIS) were administered to 150 male and female college students from four ethnic groups '(African American; Asian American; Hispanic American; White American) to assess the influence of gender and ethnic group membership upon ego and ethnic identity formation. The results revealed striking differences among ethnic group members in the way that they identified with their ethnicity and cultural heritage. Most notable was that African Americans scored highest in ethnic identity compared to other groups except Latino Americans. These results suggest that the values of family interdependence and collectivism, which characterize traditional Latino and African American values, may discourage ego identity exploration and foster an attitude of acceptance and commitment to cultural traditions. In light of the fact that Asian Americans scored the lowest on ethnic identity, it suggests that more research is needed in examining ethnic identity with Asian concepts of self. This study also found that female participants scored significantly higher in ethnic identity than their male counterparts. Additional analysis revealed that the ego identity status, foreclosure, was a significant predictor of ethnic identity. (Contains 41 references.) As ethnic minorities integrate into American society, balancing their minority culture with mainstream American culture becomes an important task in identity development. It becomes an even more complex process when gender is added to the scenario. This article suggests that it is the interaction of gender and ethnicity-not each factor in isolation-that profoundly affects identity formation. To support this assertion, this review of literature presents (a) an overview of research on gender and ethnic socialization, (b) a synthesis of research on gender and ethnicity in identity formation, and (c) practical implications for counselors.
