To initiate a culturally-responsive discourse, the authors delineate between so-called down low behavior and an emerging brand of same-sex attraction popularly termed homo-thug. Hip-hop culture is discussed as necessary cultural context to this phenomenon as well as an alternative theoretical lens. The paper then delineates between sexual attraction, orientation, and identity to create intellectual space for alternatives to mainstream, White gay explanatory frameworks. this interdisciplinary discussion generates from the position that organic and culturally-responsive frameworks are necessary to understand social and psychological phenomena in helpful ways. More pointedly, such frameworks are compulsory when attempting to understand phenomena among groups such as African Americans whos...

Experience with mentoring is emphasized with a discussion of creating purpose with research that will influence the students, clients, churches, communities and broader audiences. Research teams are the context for creating mentoring relationships with students. Mentoring relationships are characterized by co-labor, spiritual activity, and a shared sense of purpose. A third goal is to use student research to help create a line of research that increases influence. Finally, our research teams are advocates for healthy relationships and sexual identity issues.Mitch Albom (1997) wrote a story about a mentoring relationship with his professor in the now-famous book Tuesdays with Morrie. The book encouraged the reader to consider what is important in the world, and the frame of this consideration is through a personal relationship with his dying professor. Its subtitle "An old man...

In that volume, Jones and Butman not only summarized most of the major psychological theories, but also looked at the places where psychological epistemologies and worldviews were similar and dissimilar to Christian faith. Without that book, I may not have finished my bachelor' s degree with my faith intact. Years later, when pursuing my master' s degree in social work concentrating in child and family studies, I wished earnestly for a similar volume on family therapies. In family therapy, where many of its founders have larger-than-life personalities and many theories contradict others, a solid reference guide that could help synthesize my faith in relationship to each theory' s underlying presuppositions was something for which I regularly longed, as both a child welfare practitioner and instructor in family therapy. I am thankful to say that book has finally arrived. Yarhouse and Sells have combined to produce an erudite and delightfully readable reference work that not only summarizes every major school of family therapy from Freud to the post-structuralist theories like narrative therapy and solution-focused therapy, but also wrestles with each theory' s presuppositions in light of a Christian worldview. The book is divided into four sections: 1) an introduction including both Christian foundations related to family therapy and the history of family therapy as a whole; 2) summaries and Christian critiques of the nine major schools of family therapy and their various subdivisions (e.g., the chapter on strategic therapies deals with both the Haley/Madanes and the Palazzoli/Milan models and the chapter on solution-focused therapies includes both O'Hanlon' s possibility therapy and the deShazer/ Berg brief therapy models); 3) discussions of Christian family therapy in relationship to critical treatment issues; and) conclusions. Each chapter in Section Two contains a description of the theory as well as its major contributors, a Christian appraisal, and a foundational bibliography. Section Three provides good blueprints for approaching various

The results of this study are consistent with existing research in this area suggesting that sexual minorities may be a distinct group in several important ways. We reported on their experiences of milestone events, meaning-making associated with identity, and concerns about campus climate in light of a range of perspectives on religious doctrine and institutional policies.

A discussion of a case example will be utilized to consolidate the reader's understanding of the Reformed theological tradition and its application to Christian spiritual formation in a clinical setting. This article implies that the impact of Reformed theology and spirituality on clinical practice is profound enough to warrant further investigations of theologically congruent psychotherapies.

Cognitive theorists believe that shame occurs when a person fails to achieve his or her standards, which are often based on social, cultural, and spiritual values. Although it is asserted that stigma causes shame among members of a sexual minority, the empirical evidence suggests that negative internal cognitions are partly responsible. By targeting negative beliefs, counselors can help sexual minorities reduce their sense of shame, particularly around issues related to sexual identity. The authors offer counseling strategies for reducing shame in sexual minority clients.

We propose a Trinitarian ministry model wherein the church serves as a holding environment—a discipling community intentionally designed to be relational, secure, and formational thereby creating a synergistic communal climate for identity development related to faith and sexuality.

Disclosure to family members is one of the most important and difficult milestones in sexual identity formation. This is a study of the experiences of Christian parents whose children came out as lesbian, gay, or bisexual. The study examined the changes in parent–child relationships and the parents’ Christian beliefs across three time points: before disclosure, in the couple months directly following disclosure, and at the time of the interview.

In an attempt to understand what might contribute to this difference a quantitative examination of God concept (rational knowledge of God), God image (experiential knowledge of God), and the role of religion was conducted. A total of 156 gay-affirming and 59 traditional-believing same-gender attracted (SGA) Christians completed an online God adjective checklist and intrinsic/extrinsic religiosity questionnaire. Results indicated that within both populations there was a statistically significant difference between God concept and God image. A statistically significant difference was also found between the two groups in both God concept and God image. Traditional-believing SGA Christians reported a God concept and God image that was significantly more wrathful than their gay-affirming counterparts.
