PurposeMost academic libraries make subject or research guides available on their web sites. Litt... more PurposeMost academic libraries make subject or research guides available on their web sites. Little is known, however, in terms of user satisfaction with guides. This study examines methods used to evaluate guides and reports on an online survey placed on each of more than 80 web‐based guides provided by Gelman Library, George Washington University.Design/methodology/approachThe survey, borrowing an approach used by Amazon.com and other web sites, consisted of a single question – Was this guide useful – and a comments box.FindingsTwo hundred ten responses were received during Fall semester 2003. Fifty two percent of responses rated guides as Very Helpful or Somewhat Helpful, while 40 percent gave ratings of Not Helpful or a Little Helpful.Originality/valueAlthough limited in scope, this simple survey revealed positive elements of the guides and identified problems that could be addressed immediately. The staffing of reference desks by nonprofessionals has been a subject of controversy in academic... more The staffing of reference desks by nonprofessionals has been a subject of controversy in academic librarianship. The view that only professional librarians are qualified to provide reference service has been challenged by the fact that nonprofessionals are being used and can effectively answer many patron queries. Several key studies have explored both the practical and theoretical implications of this use of , nonprofessionals. Bunge's research (1967) on the relationship between library education and reference efficiency demonstrated no significant difference between nonprofessional and professional performance in answering questions accurately, although professionals took significantly less time to answer queries. 1 A questionnaire survey conducted by Boyer and Theimer (1975) concluded that nonprofessionals were used in 69 percent of smallto medium-sized academic libraries. 2 This study was followed by an examination of question-answering success by nonprofessionals, done by H...

Burkhardt (1987) reviewed all 150 papers from the Journal of Animal Behavior for the 7 years of its existence (1911â€"1917) to reveal differences in research undertaken by psychologists and zoologists. Beach (1950) reviewed 613 experimental studies published in the Journal of Animal Behavior and the Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology between 1911 and 1948. He categorized seven types of animal behavior and logged the number of species studied, and he concluded that
