We investigate whether this injection of additional funds has improved the quality of healthcare in the targeted hospitals. As a measure of quality, we use the readmission rate (ratio of readmissions within 30 days over total hospitalizations) and the mortality rate. Our results show a statistically significant but small effect of ESIF on the readmission rate but not on the mortality rate. We argue that these results suggest that the main problem in Slovak healthcare is low productivity rather than lack of funding.

We .nd that past European transfers have played virtually no role in the referendum. Economically strong regions tend to be in favor of remaining in the EU. Somewhat surprisingly, the intensity of immigration from the EU is positively correlated with the Remain vote.

We analyze the impact of EU structural and cohesion funds on economic growth of European regions,... more We analyze the impact of EU structural and cohesion funds on economic growth of European regions, using 2SLS to tackle the potential problem of endogeneity, and estimating a spatial model to account for inter-regional spillovers. We use the presence of environmentally protected areas (under the European Union’s Natura 2000 program) as instruments for the receipts of funds from the EU Cohesion Policy. We find that the European funds have a significant and positive effect on regional economic growth in the EU. The inter-regional spillovers in the effect of Cohesion Policy on regional growth are found to be important: most of the effect takes place outside of the recipient region rather than inside. However, there is considerable heterogeneity in the effect of Cohesion Policy across individual EU member states: the effect is stronger in the new member states, and weak or negative in the countries hit by the recent austerity measures. Finally, our results confirm the positive impact of ...

Two variables, value added and employment, are decomposed for the period 1996-2008 as well as 1996-2004 and 2004-2008, what allows a comparison between the pre-accession period and the post-accession period for all four countries. The results point out that both variables were driven by the changes in the domestic final demand, what might be the result of an increase in productivity. Interestingly, the effect of the changes in exports to the old member states declined after the accession. On the contrary, the effect of the changes in exports to the other new member states and the rest of the world increased in the post-accession period in all Visegrád countries...
