Rank's interpretation, which centers on the choice between knowing and living, is presented as an explanation for the dominance of the generally accepted policy of confidential adoption. It is proposed that confidentiality, which entails concealing the child's whereabouts from the biological parents, suggests that “Laius might kill Oedipus,” thereby attributing evil intentions to the biological parents even in cases where it is their inability, not their evil intent, that leads to the adoption of the child. It is proposed that this portrayal of biological parents might impede adoption and could be avoided if the general policy of adoption were not bound by confidentiality.

Only seven of them agreed to a family interview, which took place at the patient's home. Although the interviews were unstructured some topics were brought up by all families and similar behavior was observed. Specially striking was the lack of empathy as well as of hostility between the parents, while a lot of hostility against all human environment was expressed and children's attempts at expressing empathy were suppressed.

A method based on this conception is proposed as a way to describe and assess parental adaptation. The adaptational view is compared with the clinical approach to parenthood, and its advantages for the detection of parental vulnerability and early intervention in the parent-infant relationship is illustrated. In addition, the conception of parental responsibility, in terms of the parent's evaluation of the balance between his/her responsibility and the infant's power, is compared with the conception of the legal approach which views parental responsibility in terms of accountability and the parent's duties and rights. The evolving change in the societal view of parental responsibility, brought about by the Children Act, requires a shift in the conceptualization of parenthood such as the one proposed by the adapta...

These constructs are central in CWP in recommending a Family Supervision Order, the most frequent measure practiced by the Dutch Juvenile Court to protect children from risk. Three types of parent-child relationship were described by this examination: (1) The child is portrayed as the cause for risk because of his personality problems; (2) The parent^child relationship is described as the risk; (3) The parent is described as carrying the risk because of his personality problems. Recommendations for a Family Supervision Order were made for all three groups. This recommendation was supported by the assessment of parental cooperation. Although four patterns of parental attitude toward professional help have been described, all ended up in presenting the parents as cooperative. The uniform recommendations made by the reporters as well as the uniform assessment of parents as cooperative indicate a parallel compliant position of the reporters visa -vis the court, as well as the construction of the parent as compliant in relation to the reporters.

The efects of the conflict on the transference relationship are examined by means of case presentations, and rules of conduct acceptable in both the professional realm and Bedouin society are proposed as an avenue toward resolution.
