This paper considers the basic thermodynamic optimization problem of extracting the most power from a stream of hot exhaust produced by urban solid waste incineration when the contact heat transfer area is fixed. For that, a mathematical model is introduced to evaluate the heat generation rate due to the waste incineration process, and the exergy rate (power) captured by a heat recovery heat exchanger. The numerical results show that when the receiving (cold) stream boils in the counterflow heat exchanger, the thermodynamic optimization consists of locating the optimal capacity rate of the cold stream. At the optimum, the cold side of the heat transfer surface divides itself into three sections: liquid preheating, boiling and vapor superheating. Microalgae cultivation photobioreactors are proposed to treat the produced emissions and increase the global system efficiency for cogeneration of high aggregated value coproducts.

The Lancet Global Health, 2019

SMSXXI aims to increase access to health services, decrease out-of-pocket health expenses (OOPHE), and reduce health inequities. SMSXXI covers uninsured, primarily low-income, populations who might be most at risk of the financial and health consequences of costly medical interventions. Methods We assessed the effects of SMSXXI on health outcomes and financial protection for Mexico's children using multiple nationally representative surveys and administrative data sources spanning 2001-16. The identification of effects relied on detailed hospital-level affiliation data mapping the geographical expansion of SMSXXI's coverage across the country over time. The units of analysis included hospitals, households, and children. Primary outcomes were neonatal and infant mortality, self-reported morbidity (health status, influenza, and diarrhoea), and child's height. Secondary outcomes were OOPHE, hospital discharges, and quality of service provision. Effects controlled for fixed and time-variant confounders using double-difference and triple-difference estimation strategies. Where feasible, we also estimated effects using exogenous variation in programme eligibility rules that limited enrolment in SMSXXI to children born after Dec 1, 2006. Findings SMSXXI was not associated with early (<1 week) neonatal mortality, but was associated with a reduction in late (<28 days) neonatal mortality by 0•139 deaths per 1000 livebirths (95% CI 0•032-0•246), or 7% (2-12) relative to the comparison base of 1•98 deaths per 1000 livebirths in 2006. SMSXI was associated with a reduction in infant mortality from conditions covered by the programme by 0•147 deaths per 1000 livebirths (0•023-0•271), or 5% (1-10) relative to the comparison base of 2•73 deaths per 1000 livebirths. The effects were largest in high baseline mortality areas. Long-term health effects, 8 years after the onset of SMSXXI, were reflected in a 0•434 cm (0•404-0•459) height increase for birth cohorts exposed to the programme and an average effect on height of 0•879 cm (0•821-0•932) for low-income populations. About 3-6 years after SMSXXI started, children reported having better health status and lower incidence of influenza and diarrhoea. The programme led to a 14% reduction (7-28) in OOPHE, primarily from hospital-related expenses. No effects were detected on hospital discharges, suggesting that SMSXXI might not have increased use. Interpretation SMSXXI promoted access to covered interventions and encouraged better primary care. The programme also promoted increased supply and quality of care by improving human and physical resources sensitive to unmet needs. Increased resource availability and improved supply of health care, rather than increased use, contributed to reduce infant mortality and improved long-term health as proxied by self-reported morbidity and child height. Consistent with the programme's focus on uninsured and low-income populations, the effects on mortality, long-term health status, and OOPHE were concentrated in vulnerable groups. However, in gastric cancer (GC), sustained responses to anti PD-1 therapy are only observed in approximately 20% of patients. The expression of alternative immune checkpoints such as Galectin 9 (Gal-9) and Tim3 has been associated to anti-PD1 resistance in other cancer types. In search of the factors that render gastric tumors resistant to immunotherapy, we hypothesized that Gal-9 expression in gastric cancer cells may enhance metastasis and immunosuppression. Methods: Bioinformatic analysis of gastric cancer data of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma from TCGA Database was performed. In vitro experiments with Gal-9 transfected gastric cancer cell line AGS were performed to elucidate Gal-9 gain of function effect on cell invasion and immune-suppressive proteins. Invasion assay using a matrigel coated transwell was performed within 24 hours of transfection. To determine changes in PDL1, E-Cadherin and N-Cadherin expression, cells were harvested 24h after transfection to analyze protein and mRNA levels through Western Blot and RT-PCR respectively. Results: TCGA database analysis demonstrate that Gal-9 expression is significantly correlated to PDL-1 expression in gastric cancer; furthermore, it was also positively correlated to immune cell markers such as FOXP3. In accordance, in vitro analysis demonstrates that exogenous expression of GAL9 results in an increase in PDL-1 protein and greater invasive potential of the AGS cell line. Conclusion: Taken together our results suggest that further studies should focus on the role played by Gal-9 is the establishment of an immune suppressive microenvironment in gastric tumors. The emission of distress stridulation is a common defense mechanism among insects, including species from the order Hymenoptera (ants, bees and wasps). Wasps from the family Mutillidae (also known as velvet ants) emit audible distress stridulations when attacked. While species-specific variation in the acoustic properties of velvet ants stridulation has been described, one common theme across species is the absence of ultrasonic frequency components (> 20 kHz). We recorded and analyzed the distress stridulation emitted by females of three species of Chilean endemic velvet ants, popularly known as panda ants: Euspinolia chilensis (Spinola, 1851), E. militaris (Mickel, 1938) and Reedomutilla gayi (Spinola, 1851). In general, the stridulation emitted by R. gayi is similar to the distress signal of other velvet ant species described to date. In contrast, the distress signals of both Euspinolia species differ from previously reported Mutillidae stridulations, including the...

Despite this, recent studies from North America and Central Europe have suggested an increase in incidence. In Latin America, NET data are scarce and scattered with only a few studies reporting registries. Our goal was to establish a NET registry in Chile. Here, we report the establishment and our first 166 NET patients. We observed a slight preponderance of males, a median age at diagnosis of 53 years and a median overall survival of 110 months. As anticipated, most tumors were gastroenteropancreatic (GEP). Survival analyses demonstrated that non-GEP or stage IV tumors presented significantly lower overall survival (OS). Similarly, patients with surgery classified as R0 had better OS compared to R1, R2, or no surgery. Furthermore, patients with elevated chromogranin A (CgA) or high Ki67 showed a trend to poorer OS; however, these differences did not reach statistical significance (log-rank test p = 0.07). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a NET registry in Chile. Median OS in our registry (110 months) is in line with other registries from Argentina and Spain. Other variables including age at diagnosis and gender were similar to previous studies; however, our data indicate a high proportion of small-bowel NETs compared to other cohorts, reflecting the need for NET regional registries. Indeed, these registries may explain regional discrepancies in incidence and distribution, adding to our knowledge on this seemingly rare, highly heterogeneous disease.

Recognition of degraded signals has been extensively demonstrated in birds, and recently studies have also reported detection of degraded patterns in anurans that call at or above ground level. In the current study we explore the vocal responses of the syntopic burrowing male frogs Eupsophus emiliopugini and E. calcaratus from the South American temperate forest to synthetic conspecific calls differing in amplitude and emulating degraded and non-degraded signal patterns. The results show a strong dependence of vocal responses on signal amplitude, and a general lack of differential responses to signals with different pulse amplitude modulation depths in E. emiliopugini and no effect of relative amplitude of harmonics in E. calcaratus. Such limited discrimination of signal degradation patterns from non-degraded signals is likely related to the burrowing habits of these species....

Acoustic signals, however, often experience amplitude losses during their transmission through the environment, reducing their detection range. Displaying from sites that increase the amplitude of the sound produced, such as cavities or some reflective surfaces, can improve the detectability of signals by distant receivers. Understanding how display sites influence sound production is, however, far from understood. We measured the effect of leaf calling sites on the calls of an arboreal (Hyalinobatrachium fleischmanni) and a leaf-litter specialist (Silverstoneia flotator) frog species. We collected the leaves where males of both species were observed calling, and conducted playback experiments to measure their effect on the amplitude of frog calls. Overall, the leaves used by H. fleischmanni and S. flotator were of similar dimensions, and amplified the calls of each species by about 5.0 and 2.5 dB, respecti...
