The radius and the mass of the control samples were equal to the radius and the mass of the proficiency test samples. The density of samples in both cases varied between 1 and 2 g/cm 3. No influence of sample density on the potassium activity results could be detected at the accuracy level achieved. The source of disagreement could not be found within the participating laboratory.

The reference to an ''unbroken chain of comparisons'' is replaced by a ''chain of calibrations.'' Calibrations, unlike comparisons, render possible an interpolation of the quantity values between indicated parameters where the calibration was performed. Calibrations of software may be performed using software-measurement standards as well. Furthermore, the traceability of quantities having a minor influence on the measurement result is not mandatory. As a consequence of these modifications, the traceability of gamma-ray spectrometric results can also be attained when gammaray spectrometry is implemented other than as a relative method.

The use of the quality system as a tool for managing and controlling the state of the laboratory is described. Two examples of control and improvement of the laboratory's performance are given.

The frequencies of observations reported in different areas were examined and analysed. The differences are interpreted in terms of the varying importance associated with the different areas as perceived by auditors and assessors.

The results of statistical analyses are discussed. Pareto analysis has shown that the majority of cases of nonconforming work originates in errors made by personnel. The sociological and psychological aspects of strategies aimed at preventing careless work are discussed. It is proposed that motivation should be used as a tool against habits that lessen awareness during routine operations. Specific recommendations regarding communication with personnel are given.
