The novel as an artefact of popular culture affords a critical encounter with the production of space for students of international politics and IPE. Departing from prevailing approaches to understanding the urban in relation to the international that tend to focus on networks and circulation, the article offers a reading of the novel as demonstrating the production of space. The article links a critique of the hierarchical relations between teacher and student to critiques of the subordination of labour to design and planning, both of which render invisible the work of producing knowledge and space. Through an analysis of the political struggles over the formal and real subsumption of labour in Perdido Street Station, the article argues that studying the politics of urbanism in relation to the international th...

Major contributions to a heterodox international political economy of finance include the work of Canadians Eric Helleiner (1994) and Randall Germain (1997), each strongly influenced by Cox; in England, critical debate about global finance has been shaped also by the contributions of Philip G. Cerny (1993), Ronen Palan (1999), Tony Porter (1993), and Geoffrey Underhill (1997). Frieden and Martin left aside important Marxist contributions from the United States to debates on finance, notably contributions from Robert Brenner (1998) ...

It ignores how the way in which the parent relates to the child expresses societal ideals translated into norms of family life”(130). Or:“Family failure expresses societal failure”(132). However, while the book examines the constraints imposed by group identities and the possibilities inherent in child development in the family, other important collectivities are not discussed. Thus, when discussing the norms of creativity as prevailing or not in families and examining how ...

If the incorporation of popular culture into IR is going to be fruitful, there must be a willingness to go beyond an engagement with illustrations of world politics. Doing so will get us closer to what is at stake in the mutual implication of popular culture and world politics.

This transformation of work is realized through a transformation of space that, in turn, signals a connection between the critique of work and the critique of International Relations (IR). To begin to think of a possible world politics that can overcome the limiting of politics in IR may indeed require the kind of critique of work that Buffy the Vampire Slayer develops-a critique that much critical theory seems to have abandoned. Thus a critique of IR entails an analytical engagement with documents that can mediate between theoretical reflection and the lived dramas of everyday life, such as those mediations produced in popular culture.

For unprotected workers the very lack of institutional protection makes articulating political demands risky. At the same time, the need to conceptualise the manner in which the workers in the households and in proximate forms of social relations of production become political subjects is increasingly urgent. The ...
