The purpose of this paper was to explore the common threads running through both traditional reli... more The purpose of this paper was to explore the common threads running through both traditional religious institutions and Hip Hop music in African-American culture. The paper first attempts to understand what religion truly is within the context of 21st century society, and concurrently apply this definition to an alternative form of spirituality in the form of Hip Hop culture. Ultimately, through the dialogues traditionally expressed in rap music, individuals can explore issues of identity and protest in a unifying and thought-provoking manner, and can access a population that is extremely reluctant and unresponsive to the more traditional modes of American religion.
