Their importance in the economy lies in the fact that they account for almost 60% of the jobs in the world, number which could be greater in developing countries. All these companies have an environmental impact that is almost imperceptible when observed individually, but if observed and analyzed as a whole, this impact is actually relevant. It is therefore important for these companies to include the concept of sustainability within their processes, which is difficult given the informal way they have managed their activities and processes. On the other hand, there are two paradigms that rule the concept of sustainability, weak sustainability and strong sustainability. As it will be presented in this chapter, both concepts are opposed and companies are normally oriented towards weak sustainability, because they are more interested in economic growth than in caring f...

This study seeks to identify those factors enabling the promotion of a TBE culture in higher education institutions with limited experience in entrepreneurship in Colombia, based on a case study in Universidad del Valle’s (Colombia) regionalization system. The methodology applied the World Café technique on interdisciplinary group sessions with coordinators of Universidad del Valle Palmira Campus academic programs, who were asked about their perceptions regarding TBE and were also asked to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats under a collaborative work scheme, which were subjected to content analysis. The results prove that developing a TBE culture demands abundant resources, and the strategic leadership needs special strengthening to ha...

The MET (material, energy, toxicity) matrix was used for the qualitative life cycle analysis along with information from unstructured interviews and from observing the production process. The actions to reduce environmental impacts were processed via a systematized information search. The results show that production and end of life stages have the greatest impacts, and actors in the supply chain must be integrated to effectively manage the materials. Furthermore, proposals to reduce negative environmental impacts were presented as a way to improve environmental performance.

Historical information on land uses and economic exchange in the CSP were synthesized in material flow models. Landscape appropriation increased in each period due to an increase in productive and extractive practices and the exchange of matter and energy. These processes were primarily driven by i) shifting environmental ideologies associated with different political regimes, ii) shifting labor relations, iii) population growth and new settlement patterns, iv) improvements in transportation and communication technologies, and v) the increase of the number and diversity of circulated goods.

Within this context, this article emphasizes the importance of the participatory development of technology and presents an index for the participatory prototype and agricultural tool appraisal (PTA index v1.0) and its application for the evaluation of the bajachonta, a technological model for the harvesting of bunches of peach palm (Bactris gasipaes Kunth.) in Colombia. It can be concluded that the proposed index is a simple, flexible and useful method to evaluate the potential scaling of prototypes of agricultural tools in a participatory manner, as well as to orient the design process and/or help in technology selection.

Research paper thumbnail of Effectiveness of vertical subsurface wetlands for iron and manganese removal from wastewater in drinking water treatment plants

Additionally, different treatment units, such as decanters and filters, accumulate high concentrations of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn), which in many cases can be discharged into the environment without any treatment when maintenance is performed. Therefore, this paper evaluates the effectiveness of vertical subsurface wetlands for Fe and Mn removal from wastewater in drinking water treatment plants, taking a pilot scale wetland with an ascending gravel bed with two types of plants: C. esculenta and P. australis in El Hormiguero (Cali, Colombia), as an example. The pilot system had three upstream vertical wetlands, two of them planted and the third one without a plant used as a control. The wetlands were arranged in parallel and each formed by three gravel beds of different diameter. The results showed no significant difference for the percentage of removal in the three wetlands for turbi...

While the cooking-culture relationship is a biocultural phenomenon that gives meaning to gastrono... more While the cooking-culture relationship is a biocultural phenomenon that gives meaning to gastronomic practices through signs and symbols shared within a community, in the 20th century, its transmission has been influenced by important processes of change, such as urban expansion and environmental pollution, which put the continuity of immaterial cultural patrimony at risk. These changes have altered the supply, conservation, and preparation of food and utensils, which are elements that demarcate the society-nature relationship and gender roles, among other things. The objective of this article is to demonstrate the role of the cultural transmission of food habits in identity formation and social cohesion, based upon an ethnographic case study in the Ancestral Community La Playa Renaciente, in Cali (Colombia). This study presents the cultural transmission of food habits, culinary practices, and their relationship with the inhabited environment. Likewise, this article presents a temporal-spatial contextualization of the locality and some oral testimonies that reveal how dietary practices constitute an important element in socialization, social cohesion, and the transmission of knowledge from generation to generation.

Aerial photographs and geographic information systems (GIS) are used to create maps of LUCC, as well as a systemized search of information on LUCC and main drivers. The results showed that pastureland presented the largest area during all periods, occupying >60% of studied area, while the secondary and mixed forests had a contraction from 23% in 1954 to 9% in 2009. The change rates evidenced a greater affectation for the secondary forest that lost 86% of its initial area through deforestation and transformation processes, while crops gained 410% with respect to their initial area. As for the transition matrix, about 27.8% of the study area presented transformation from land use and cover into other land covers, 14.7% presented deforestation and loss of land cover in their initial area, and 57.5% remained unchanged. It is concluded that socio-economic factors such as livestock farming, agriculture and market prices have been an important driver in the modification of the landscape.

However, using multiple perspectives and experiences can improve hazard management strategies and create safer communities. This paper examines a Colombian landslide management program to highlight the prospects and limitations of incorporating non-expert knowledge into hazard management. The Guardianas de la Ladera (Guardians of the Slope) in Manizales, Colombia is a program in which female heads of household are hired to maintain landslide-prevention infrastructure and communicate landslide risk to the community. While the highly regarded program is perceived as having reduced the frequency of landslides and associated damages, the hierarchical institutional structure inhibits bottom-up communication, including information that could improve long-term vulnerability reduction. We argue that regardless of the location, scale, or specific hazard being addressed, incorporating non-expert knowledge into hazard management potentially illuminates sources of vulnerability not recognized by technical or development experts.
