Research paper thumbnail of Effect of aluminum on antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds content in in vitro cultured blueberries

Acid soils are found throughout the world. A significant problem of acid soils is the active aluminum content, which may result toxic to plant. The present study was undertaken to assess the toxicities of Al for Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) cultivated in vitro and treated with 100 and 200 μM Al. The effects of Al concentration on malondialdehyde (MDA) content, antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds of blueberry after 7, 14 and 21 days of treatment were established. The analysis of the MDA accumulated in the tissues of the blueberry seedlings indicates that Al concentration increases the damage caused by lipid peroxidation, for both treatments, after 14 days. The highest antioxidant activity in the extracts was observed at 200 μM Al after 14 days of treatment, being chlorogenic and ellagic acids the most significant metabolites involved in the antioxidant properties. Then, the content of Al in soil could be modulate the content of bioactive compounds in blueberry plants.

Scarce information exists on the trace element dynamic uptake of plants grown in the field, especially on those potentially hazardous. In this study, the uptake process of As, Cd, Cu, and Zn in maize plants was quantified and characterized throughout the entire season. Methods Along two seasons, the uptake dynamics of field-grown maize plants in absorbing the soil borne trace elements was examined. Biomass production and the concentration of the elements in plant and soil solution samples were determined. A kinetic model was employed to characterize the uptake by plants. The kinetic parameters of the uptake process, maximum cumulative uptake rate, U max , time to reach 50 % of U max , t U50 , and reciprocal of the uptake rate, b U when followed throughout the season in terms of the plant's growing degree days remained constant between seasons and were element specific. In spite of the large amount biomass produced, maize plants extracted minute quantities of Cd and As. Increasing cumulative uptake rates of As, Cd, Cu, and Zn from the soil took place primarily in the early half of the growing season when the biomass accumulation was still less than 50 % of the maximum harvested biomass. The element-specific plant uptake factor (PUF), which denote the partition of trace elements between the soil solution and plant phases, decreased following

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of ash from forest fires on phosphorus availability, transport, chemical forms, and content in volcanic soils

Environmental Chemistry, 2010

Intensive fertilisation and the availability of phosphorus species (less than 10%) in cultivable soils of volcanic origin are causing the accumulation of P in these soils. Phosphorus is a macronutrient that severely limits good agricultural development, so knowledge of the distribution and the different forms of P present in soils is fundamental for sustainable agricultural practice. This novel study reports the existence of increased available P in all the soils that received a load of plant ash from different tree species. . The effect associated with the distribution of ash from plantations of native, pine, and eucalyptus forests over five soils of volcanic origin was studied by means of column leaching experiments. The results show a clear increase of pH (up to 4.4 units) and of the soil’s electric conductivity (up to 21 times), whereas total extractable P content increased 3 to 10 times with respect to the control. These effects follow a sequence dependin...
