Il caso Clinton-Lewinsky ha generato una giustificata ondata di riget-to e di ripugnanza per le c... more Il caso Clinton-Lewinsky ha generato una giustificata ondata di riget-to e di ripugnanza per le caratteristiche della vicenda in sé e del suo uso politico, mediologico e pubblico. Ci sono molte, ottime, ragioni per questa ripugnanza, condivisa largamente sia negli Stati Uniti, sia in Eu-ropa, che si estende alla utilizzazione speculativa del caso da parte della destra repubblicana e della stampa scandalistica. Inoltre, in Europa, e frequentemente in Italia, si è assunto un atteggiamento di sufficienza per il cosiddetto "puritanesimo degli americani", condito della loro ip-otetica credulità e vocazione a farsi manipolare dai media. E tuttavia quest'ultimo atteggiamento non è sufficiente a capire l'importanza del caso Lewinsky e il modo in cui esso svela caratteristiche profonde della vita pubblica e della cultura politica americana. Public narratives regarding what constitutes a ‘healthy family’ change over time and are closely ... more Public narratives regarding what constitutes a ‘healthy family’ change over time and are closely linked with national history and contingent needs. This essay analyses the interdependence between the American family and the nation from the 1950s to the emergence of the so-called pluralist family in the 1960s and 1970s, up to the revival of family values from the 1980s to the present. It exemplifies how the connection between family and nation tends to strengthen during circumstances of danger, such as wars and economic crises, and to weaken when multiple familial setups are considered.

We show that certain right-angled Coxeter groups have finite index subgroups that quotient to Z w... more We show that certain right-angled Coxeter groups have finite index subgroups that quotient to Z with finitely generated kernels. The proof uses Bestvina-Brady Morse theory facilitated by combinatorial arguments. We describe a variety of examples where the plan succeeds or fails. Among the successful examples are the right-angled reflection groups in H 4 with fundamental domain the 120-cell or the 24-cell.
