We adopt the well-known approach based on the reformulation of the equilibrium problem as a global optimization problem through an appropriate gap function. We propose a solution method based on the inexact (and hence, less expensive) evaluation of the gap function, and on the employment of a nonmonotone line search. We prove global convergence properties of the proposed inexact method under standard assumptions. Some preliminary numerical results show the potential computational advantages of the inexact method compared with a standard exact descent method.

This general format received an increasing interest in the last decade mainly because many theoretical and algo- rithmic results developed for one of these models can be often extended to the others through the unifying language provided by this common format. This survey paper aims at covering the main results concerning the existence of equilibria and the solution methods for finding them.

Research paper thumbnail of An Integer Linear Programming Approach for Radio-Based Localization of Shipping Containers in the Presence of Incomplete Proximity Information

IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems

The most advanced solutions that are currently adopted in ports and terminals use technologies ba... more The most advanced solutions that are currently adopted in ports and terminals use technologies based on radio frequency identification (RFID) and the Global Positioning System (GPS) to identify and localize shipping containers in the yard. Nevertheless, because of the limitations of these solutions, the position of containers is still affected by errors, and it cannot be determined in real time. In this paper, a nonconventional approach is presented: Each container is equipped with nodes that use wireless communication to detect neighbor containers and to send proximity information to a base station. At the base station, geometrical constraints and proximity data are combined to determine the positions of containers. Missing information due to faulty nodes is tolerated by modeling geometrical constraints as an integer linear programming problem. Numerical simulations show that most of the containers can be localized, even when the number of nodes that are affected by faults is on th...

The goal of this research is to design and develop a job shop scheduling system (a scheduling software) that can generate effective job shop schedules using the multi-layered perceptron (MLP) networks. A method for organizing sample data has been developed using a de- notation bit to indicate processing sequence and processing time of a job simultaneously. The BP training process has been used to control local minimal solutions. Additionally, a heuristics has been suggested to improve and revise the initial production schedule. The proposed production activity schedule system is tested in a real production environment and simulation results show that the proposed model and algorithm are effective. Keyword: Job shop scheduling, Multi-layered perceptron (MLP), Production planning
