In this review, we describe seven transgenic approaches, and combinations thereof, that can be used to increase the concentration of Fe in rice seeds. The first approach is to enhance the Fe storage capacity of grains through expression of the Fe storage protein ferritin under the control of endosperm-specific promoters. Using this approach, the concentration of Fe in the seeds of transformants was increased by approximately 2-fold in polished seeds. The second approach is to enhance Fe translocation by overproducing the natural metal chelator nicotianamine; using this approach, the Fe concentration was increased by up to 3-fold in polished seeds.

This review highlights the diverse consumer attitudes towards the safety of food. The diversity among consumers is based on a variety of factors, including demographics and socio-economic status. The relationship between consumer attitudes, knowledge and behaviour regarding food safety is also examined in this paper. It indicates that different attitudes do not necessarily lead to behaviours that increase the safety of the food consumed. It can be concluded that there exists the need for professional assistance for consumers regarding food safety issues. #

Relative myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) is the standard imaging approach for the diagnosis and prognostic work-up of coronary artery disease (CAD). However, this technique may underestimate the extent of disease in patients with 3-vessel CAD. Positron emission tomography (PET) is also able to quantify myocardial blood flow. Rubidium-82 ( 82 Rb) is a valid PET tracer alternative in centers that lack a cyclotron. The aim of this study was to assess whether assessment of myocardial flow reserve (MFR) measured with 82 Rb PET is an independent predictor of severe obstructive 3-vessel CAD.

In total, 17 cheese vendors were observed and 108 consumer surveys were administered. Observation of vendors demonstrated good safety practices through pre-packaging of product and clean premises. Observations revealed that eight vendors (47%) had problems with refrigeration, while the majority of vendors lacked in the practice of hand washing. Approximately one-half of the consumers surveyed did not purchase farmers market cheese, and identified distance from home as the main reason. This concern with distance from home presents the opportunity to increase the number of farmers markets in additional communities so as to acquire a greater share of the population for cheese vendors. Selection, freshness and flavour were listed as the primary reasons for purchasing farmers market cheese.

Participants in the study represented the supply chain and included federal slaughterhouses, federal processors of ready-to-eat meat products, government agencies involved in auditing and inspection, and the retail sector involved in the auditing of meat facilities. Using in-depth interviews, the extent of auditing and its implementation on the continual improvement process were explored. Auditing activities were conducted as required for government recognition, retailer approval, and the facility's maintenance of its Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) programme. Correction of deviations identified during audits led to continual improvement activities. However, only two of the participants described secondary quality management schemes that linked auditing with continual improvement.

The research site was Toronto, Canada. A survey methodology was applied and a total of 254 Chinese Canadian respondents participated. The results revealed a strong relationship between Chinese identification and conspicuous consumption. Some mediating effect of two acculturation dimensions on the proposed relationship was also found in this study.
Multitasking by Multivalent Circular DNA Aptamers

An important characteristic in meeting the needs of these applications is improved stability in physiological fluids, which is most often accomplished with chemical modification or unnatural nucleotides. In an alternative approach we have specified the design of a multivalent circular DNA aptamer topology that encompasses a number of properties relevant to nucleic acid therapeutic candidates, especially the ability to multitask by combining different activities together within a modular structure. Improved stability in blood products, greater conformational stability, antidoting by complementary circular antiaptamers, heterovalency, transcription factor decoy activity and minimal unintended effects upon the cellular innate immune response are desirable properties that are described here. Multitasking by circular DNA aptamers could similarly find applications in diagnostics and biomaterials, where the combination of interchangeable modules might generate new functions, such as anticoagulation coupled with reversible cell capture as, described here. These results provide a platform for further exploration of multivalent circular aptamer properties, especially in novel combinations of nucleic acid therapeutic modes.

Socio-psychological models have been used to describe factors that influence the implementation of food safety management systems (FSMSs) in food processing facilities. The theory of planned behavior posits that perceived control over one's own behavior, one's attitude and the influence of others are antecedents of behavioral intention and/or behavior. The objectives of this study were to identify background factors that influence food safety behaviors of production workers in small and medium sized meat processing facilities and examine how these factors are applicable to the theory of planned behavior. Using a qualitative approach, the researchers conducted 13 in-depth interviews at five meat plants and two focus group interviews with representatives of government and industry agencies. These interviews generated 219 single-spaced pages of verbatim transcripts, which were analyzed by us...

The iron deficiency-responsive cis-acting element binding factors 1 and 2 (IDEF1 and IDEF2) regulate transcriptional response to iron deficiency in rice roots. Clarification of the functions of IDEF1 and IDEF2 could uncover the gene regulation mechanism. Spatial patterns of IDEF1 and IDEF2 expression were analysed by histochemical staining of IDEF1 and IDEF2 promoter-GUS transgenic rice lines. Expression patterns of the target genes of IDEF1 and IDEF2 were analysed using transformants with induced or repressed expression of IDEF1 or IDEF2 grown in iron-rich or in iron-deficient solutions for 1 d. IDEF1 and IDEF2 were highly expressed in the basal parts of the lateral roots and vascular bundles. IDEF1 and IDEF2 expression was dominant in leaf mesophyll and vascular cells, respectively. These expression patterns were similar under both iron-deficient and iron-sufficient conditi...
Positron emission tomography: a study of PET test-related anxiety

This study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial in which patients were randomly allocated to receive a mailed information pamphlet (intervention) or no mailed pamphlet two weeks prior to the appointment (usual care). The results of this study suggested that sending information pamphlets to patients scheduled for PET scans did not decrease pre-test levels of patient anxiety or result in increased patient knowledge about test preparation and procedures.
