One of the main drivers of this growth is the recent economic recession which pushes IT managers to look for ways to reduce infrastructural costs while retaining their competitive edge. This search led to a number of new technologies of which cloud computing is the most popular. Even though its application had existed for years by providers such as Yahoo and Hotmail, the term cloud computing only became popular in 2006. Since then, most of the studies carried out on the topic have been on its technological features.
This study is an investigation to know the kind of changes that occur in organisations, especially in the IT department, when cloud computing applications are adopted. It is meant to provide a guide for stakeholders in the industry to know the impact of the cloud applications. The study was carried out by taking a survey of managers’ opinion on how their organisations would react to the adoption based on four organisational variables; size, culture, structure and IT provision. This information was then used to conduct interviews with IT managers in organisations that have adopted cloud computing applications to know what changes were taking place. The study found that most of these variables would change at different levels depending on the job function using the application. It also found that the IT department will be the most affected and the extent of change would depend on the current infrastructure.
