This paper attempts to analyse the use of behavioral policy insights to help provide a solution t... more This paper attempts to analyse the use of behavioral policy insights to help provide a solution that helps increase personal responsibility at a very cost effective level - thereby improving uptake of Solar Energy products in Rural India. Behavioral policy has a range of promising theories of changes at an individualistic level – including classical conditioning (changing the unconditioned stimulus that affects personal actions); consistency at the cognitive level (actions determined by consistency in one’s values and beliefs); social cognitive conditioning (individual confidence in ability to undertake an action); Heuristic and Biases (that are not considered when an individual is thought of as a rational being).
While Behavioral Policy is a very new branch of thought in general, it is doubly so in India. There are scant notions of the use of Behavioral Policy insights at the policy making level in India. This paper attempts to use widely accepted behavioral policy interventions into the Indian reality – specifically in the non-electrified rural setting.
