Research paper thumbnail of Factors associated with mortality in hospitalized cardiovascular disease patients infected with COVID‐19

Immunity, inflammation and disease, Jan 20, 2022

IntroductionTo reduce mortality in hospitalized patients with COVID‐19 and cardiovascular disease... more IntroductionTo reduce mortality in hospitalized patients with COVID‐19 and cardiovascular disease (CVD), it is necessary to understand the relationship between patient's symptoms, risk factors, and comorbidities with their mortality rate. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first which take into account the determinants like risk factors, symptoms, and comorbidities leading to mortality in CVD patients who are hospitalized with COVID‐19.MethodsThis study was conducted on 660 hospitalized patients with CVD and COVID‐19 recruited between January 2020 and January 2021 in Iran. All patients were diagnosed with the previous history of CVD like angina, myocardial infarction, heart failure, cardiomyopathy, abnormal heart rhythms, and congenital heart disease before they were hospitalized for COVID‐19. We collected data on patient's signs and symptoms, clinical and paraclinical examinations, and any underlying comorbidities. t test was used to determine the significant difference between the two deceased and alive groups. In addition, the relation between pairs of symptoms and pairs of comorbidities has been determined via correlation computation.ResultsOur findings suggest that signs and symptoms such as fever, cough, myalgia, chest pain, chills, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia had no impact on patients' mortality. There was a significant correlation between COVID‐19 cardiovascular patients' mortality rate and symptoms such as headache, loss of consciousness (LOC), oxygen saturation less than 93%, and need for mechanical ventilation.ConclusionsOur results might help physicians identify early symptoms, comorbidities, and risk factors related to mortality in CVD patients hospitalized for COVID‐19.

It usually affects immunocompromisedpatients with poorly controlled blood glucose and ketoacidosis. The diagnosis of mucormycosis is veryhard, particularly in severely immunocompromised patients. Here we describe a case of pulmonarymucormycosis in a well controlled diabetic patient who had limited clinical signs and symptoms. Thepatient was unsuccessfully treated with amphotericin B and died. This report seems to be a rare case ofpulmonary mucormycosis in well controlled diabetes mellitus.

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) plays an essential role in the development of osteoporosis. High levels of PTH for prolonged periods lead to a decrease in bone density. However, intermittent administration of PTH is an effective treatment for osteoporosis, suggesting that careful dosing of PTH can have a therapeutic benefit in the treatment of osteoporosis.

The term "nephroceuticals" is relatively new, although the study of utilizing natural or active compounds to manage kidney disease has been emerging for many years. Nephroceuticals have shown promise in supporting conventional therapies such as dialysis and kidney transplantation, and are purported to have fewer adverse effects compared to conventional chemical compounds.

Povidone-iodine is another agent that has been used for treating pleural effusion. Objectives: We aimed to compare the effects of doxycycline and povidone iodine in treating pleural effusion. Patients and Methods: Forty-one patients with pleural effusion were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups. After insertion of the chest tube, pleurodesis was performed in the first group with povidone iodine and doxycycline in the second group. The chest tube clamped and opened one hour later. Then, connected to the suction through a double chest bottle. By decreasing of drainage to less than 50 cc per day, the chest tube was removed and the patients were evaluated three days later for pain, fever, empyema, recurrent effusion and long-term side effects at 7th, 30th, 60th and 90th day. Results: The pain intensity was not different between two groups (P > 0.05). None of the patients had empyema and other side effe...

Patients and Methods: In a case-control study one hundred consecutive cancer patients who referred to Fatemieh hospital in Semnan, Iran (regardless of the type of cancer and its stage) were enrolled. One hundred matched non- cancer individuals were selected as controls. The status of psychological stress was assessed using a questionnaire. Results: The prevalence of psychological stress was 70% among cancer patients and 40% among controls (p<0.001). In a multivariate logistic regression model, the prevalence of psychological stress was shown to be higher among cancer patients compared to controls (OR = 3.01, 95% CI: 1.46- 6.19, p=0.003) (Table 1). Conclusion: Regardless of the type of cancer, Iranian cancer patients suffer a high level of psychological stress which indicates the need for screening for stress among them.

These patients experience a wide range of problems, thus it is very useful to make a change in their lives. Hemodialysis reduces the level of antioxidants required for the body and causes oxidative stress. Many studies have noted the positive role of anti-oxidants in chronic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and kidney diseases, however, some studies have reported their slight effect on reduction of mortality and cardiovascular diseases. Turmeric is one of the sources of antioxidants and one of the seasoning used in foods. Given the properties and many applications of turmeric (curcumin) which are mentioned in ancient and new sources as well as in traditional medicine, many empirical and human studies have been conducted so far to investigate its effects. Hence, in this study we reviewed previous studies in order to investigate the effects of the turmeric (curcum...
