In my research paper I would like to examine, “How the portrayal of minorities in television show... more In my research paper I would like to examine, “How the portrayal of minorities in television shows have changed over the last 20 years?” with regards to white washing, colour-blind casting, and how they influence the changes to come within recent years from the likes of television shows such as, ‘Grey’s Anatomy”, “Scandal”, and “Degrassi”. I will examine the shows with regards to white washing and colour-blind casting and how each show influenced change throughout its portrayal of characters.

For this written task, I will write a blog article about how the television show “Scandal”created... more For this written task, I will write a blog article about how the television show “Scandal”created by Shonda Rhimes, represents African American women through the character of Olivia Carolyn Pope, played by Kerry Washington. Where the show is based on a real-life crisis handler named Judy Smith, also African American. In class, we have looked at how the show “America’s Next Top Model” defined the concept of beauty, a documentary “Miss Representation” and some articles on “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” as well as some blog articles that criticize ANTM.

This written task is aimed at part 2 of the IB English Language and Literature course – Language and Mass Communication, where it has been based on the topic of Arts and Entertainment. Where this specially addresses the topic of the abuse of power, how television shows portray women and also in the entertainment industry.

I have been greatly influenced by the recent controversy in the Oscar nominations that were announced which sparked an international debate over the lack of racial diversity in the nominations. Where an in-class discussion also led me to consider the representations of beauty in a wide variety of media, and how beauty, in particular, is often defined regarding Caucasian standards.

This written assignment addresses how this show can change the way people think of the portrayal of African-American women in television shows and the media. I chose to do a blog article for this assignment because I felt that in this way I could best express what I learned from the topics we studied in this unit and how I feel about them. Which would be a realistic way that I could openly publish my personal opinions on the issue of race, beauty and the media.
