This study aimed to investigate the effects of parent's socio-economic status and the coping mech... more This study aimed to investigate the effects of parent's socio-economic status and the coping mechanisms of parents on the academic performance of students in Los Baňos. The researchers conducted a face-to-face interview to one hundred (100) respondents, fifty (50) parents and fifty (50) students' from selected Barangays in Los Banos, specifically, Brgy. Bambang, Bayog, Malinta, Mayondon, San Antonio and Tadlac. It shows that having a low socio-economic status makes every parent respondent to think of another way of living to get money for the educational needs for their children. Socio-economic status is an economic and sociological combined total measure of a person's work experience and of an individuals or family economic and social position in relation to others, based on income, education, and occupation. Coping mechanism is an adaptation to environmental stress that is based on conscious or unconscious choice and that enhances control over behavior or gives psychological comfort. Academic performance the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals. Base on the findings of the study, it shows that majority of the respondents stated that their monthly income was not enough to support their children's educational needs. That's why most of the respondents tend to borrow money or " pangungutang " from their relatives, with sixty-two percent (62%). And lastly, almost half of the respondents answered that they pursue their study just to have a better life on the future despite of poverty they encounter with forty-six percent (46%).
