The study relates initially to the conventional coding and is followed by a study on turbo code. A comparative study is carried out between convolutional coding and turbo coding and between different iterative coding algorithms (turbo coding). The study puts in evidence the contribution of the soft decoding methods (soft decision decoding) compared to the hard methods of decoding (hard decision coding), in the occurrence of the Viterbi algorithm. The AWGN channel (12 kbps) and the standard 3GPP (64 kbps) are thus utilised for the conventional and turbo coding respectively.

TMS320C6416 TI's fixed point DSP, part of the C6416 DSK platrform, is utilized. Real time simulations are made possible by using real time data exchange (RTDX) technology. For performance evaluation extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart analysis is used. EXIT charts reveal that fixed point implementation is feasible at possibly no performance degradation. Based on the measured number of cycles of different constituent sub-functions of the IC-MMSE receiver, a data transmission rate of up to 186 Kb/s can be reached for a 5-users load and processing gain of 7 in an AWGN channel

A multiuser-LMS-like structure along with smoothing/prediction filters to improve tracking quality is suggested. A performance versus complexity analysis is conducted, in cdma2000 and WCDMA environments, over highly interesting settings including different data rates, channel types and mobile speeds. It has

A multiuser steepest Wiener LMS (MS-WLMS) like structure algorithm along with smoothing/prediction filters to improve tracking quality is suggested. This paper presents a customized and fixed-point hardware parallel implementation of the proposed algorithm for WCDMA uplink transmission in third generation (3G) wireless system. Additional speedup in the execution time is achieved over the well known maximum likelihood channel estimation for DS-CDMA. It is also shown that our solution could achieve the real-time requirements of 3GPP standards applied in WCDMA systems.

Of particular interest is the use of adaptive filters block (AFB) dedicated to each user with its respective input signals independent from other users' contributions. These AFB are mixed with interference canceller block in a cascade arrangement. As shown in this paper, this proposed MUD can outperform the decision feedback soft multistage interference canceller (DF-Soft-MPIC) MUD with complexity reduction of 4. Algorithmic description and performance of low complexity MUD method are considered in this paper and FPGA implementation in a companion paper, Part II.
