This is necessary not only to control and to reduce the emissions but also to calculate the real emission load resulting from motor vehicles. Global measurements made on representative driving cycles or calculations made with global emission factors do not reflect the real emission characteristics of vehicles on the road. In this paper, a theoretical approach is demonstrated for the calculation of the CO emissions of a vehicle powered by a gasoline engine. The calculation model is based on the air excess ratio (X) records of the engine while following a driving cycle. Other engine parameters, such as engine speed, ignition time advance, throttle valve position, intake air and coolant temperatures, fuel and airflow rates, are also recorded to feed the thermodynamic cycle and CO emission calculation models. The calculated and the measured total CO emissions at the e...

In recent years there has been considerable development in vehicle technology to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of passenger cars, but at the same time number of vehicles per 1000 capita is increasing especially in developing countries. In this study, the effect of driving patterns on CO2 emissions has been investigated by testting a sample of thirty passenger cars according to three different driving cycles. Different emission reduction technologies are also investigated for the same fleet.

Results were compared with experimental data obtained for a Ford Ecotorq NHDD diesel engine with a common-rail fuel system. After the verification of the developed model for different operating conditions of various load and engine speed, different split injection schemes with multiple pulses per cycle were considered. Results show that timing and duration of injection pulses and mass ratio of fuel injected have the major influence. NO x emissions can be reduced with a two-stage combustion resulting from early preinjection and late main injection with almost equal amounts of fuel mass fraction. Fuel mass fraction values of less than 20% in preinjection do not result in noticeable improvement.

Vehicle speed transition matrices formed from the measured data are used in two stages to obtain a representative speed-time history for the route in consideration minimizing the deviation from average values for vehicle speed, acceleration and acceleration in relation to speed. Sample calculations have been performed indicating reasonable results.

The use of down-sized engines provides benefit for reducing emissions and fuel consumption especially at the inner city driving conditions. However, when the engine demands additional power, utilizing a turbocharging system is required. This study is a joint work of Istituto Motori CNR with Automotive Laboratory of Mechanical Engineering Faculty of Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and the objective of this study was devoted to increase the understanding of various engine operating conditions on emissions, especially at low load. The trade-off between Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) emissions in a Diesel engine has been examined depending on turbocharging rates and the rate of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) applied. Experimental and numerical investigations were carried out to study the optimum conditions for providing lowest emission rates in a Diesel engine.

Exhaust emission and fuel consumption maps were obtained under laboratory conditions for an engine converted to CNG/diesel fuel operation. These values are then used in the simulation model to predict the total exhaust emission and fuel consumption on a driving cycle evaluated
